I ran my program without it and it refused to run because there was no letter F in the other words so it never got as far as checking for a unique solution. There are a number of additional types of puzzle - the Uber-Gogen, the Ultra-Gogen and just when you thought it was all getting a bit difficult, the Hyper-Gogen puzzle. The short of it is that you have a square, twenty five cell board and each cell carries a different letter of the alphabet, from A to Y. Then there is also the GoldenGogen which is like the HyperGogen+ except that now, the layout is designed by hand and there is no limit as to how close the clue cells can be to each other. Although the puzzles were classed as more difficult than the common newspaper versions I find them if anything easier. The humble Gogen puzzle is a simple puzzle that you can solve on a short bus journey but we'll have none of that here - there is a dark side, a very dark side and we are not even talking about an evil twin.

The fewer letters you have in the clue words, the harder the puzzle is and as you progress through the book, that is what happens.As you go from puzzle to puzzle, first of all, the centre cell is left empty in the easiest, then another and so on until finally, you are down to just two clue letters, one of which is not in a corner so again, you only need logic to work out all of the letter positions. Finally, as an improvement suggestion for the presentation: if you put the clue words to the right of the grid, and the alphabet below it (with the given letters already crossed out), it's much easier to work the puzzle, whether in printed form or in graphics software. I also worked as Derby's Pavement Artist, appearing on the television series 'What's My Line' and beating the panel. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

The GoldenGogen is like the HyperGogen+ except that now, the clue cells can be right next to each other and the network of letters on the board is designed by hand. I worked in a number of bands as a musician and running some of them, playing anything from pop music through to modern jazz.We have shared Andrew’s Gogen puzzle on his behalf with his permission, so he is not following this thread. I love doing Gogen puzzles in the newspaper but this is the first book I have found with just Gogen puzzles.
