The cute little EX5 follows the same design language of their D30 PRO and A30 PRO units, using absolutely the same case size, weight and build quality, which is a great thing. With all due respect, it’s impossible creating a small and affordable combo that would sound good on everything and EX5 is exactly like that, scoring points in key areas and losing in others.

The most noticeable difference between the two will be the fact that the EX5 goes for a warmer sound and ends up being more musical and enjoyable for longer listening sessions. But add some distorted rock or metal, maybe a cluttered electronica and EX5 will start choking and closing in its soundstage. In my experience, the sound stage was absolutely the best among all DAC/AMPs I've listened to recently (so Topping EX5 vs SMSL HO200 + SMSL DO200, xDuoo XD-05 Plus, xDuoo TA-10, Fiio K5 Pro, Creative G6, Creative X-Fi HD + Schiit Magni Heresy). When it comes to speed and fast decays, it sounds as agile and as nimble as a top-performing DAC would be sounding in a well-thought system, easily keeping up with the most demanding tunes.You can manually select one of the 3 brightness pre-sets or you could set it to ‘Auto’ mode and let the device do it for you.

Well, it sounds exactly like a miniature version of its DX7 PRO sibling that I’ve hailed as being a dead-neutral combo, focusing mostly on technicalities, rather than on the act of music listening and the same can be said about the EX5. The mids and vocals overall have ok detail and I can’t say I was disappointed but the main thing I tested this against was the EX5 from Topping and I found that to have better mids. EX5 might be using different op-amps, but it has the same working principle and some of the lowest noise floor ever recorded. The line outs do have a noticeable volume difference so keep this in mind when doing line out to a different amp or speaker amp. Absolutely linear, accurate and transparent yet very musical sounding with a great deal of natural timbre and tonal accuracy.Don’t ask me why the most covered manufacturer I have around here is Topping Audio, but if you do…it wasn’t one of my goals. I 'sidegraded' my desktop setup from a Topping D50s/A50s stack to an EX5 to get rid of a very audible ground loop issue after introducing some new studio monitors into my desktop setup. And you also want a headphone amp for a desktop solution if you're just in the headphones this is great personally for me I like this for two channel listening with a variable output. I want to be very specific that if your headphones are fully driven, then the smaller soundstage wouldn’t be as claustrophobic and closed-in, but with harder loads it certainly loses air, definition and control.
