About this deal

There are better books about helping the environment, this was quite gloomy and it seemed pointless to be tacked on to a Christmas story. Renowned children's author Michael Morpurgo teams up with bestselling illustrator Jim Field in this stunning Christmas picture book. Night Mayor Franklefink has vanished from the Transylvanian Express - and it's up to you to solve the case! The topic of climate change in this story has been approached in a lovely way which allows children to relate more to the topic.

Instead of sending a Christmas card or a present (she'll have plenty of those), Grandpa sends Mia a letter. Author Guy Bass introduces SCRAP, about one robot who tried to protect the humans on his planet against an army of robots.

I didn't see the point of this being a Christmas book, a family sit in front of a Christmas tree in their large house and say that each year they read a letter from Grandad. I was excited to read this as I have enjoyed many Morpurgo books and I love Christmas picture books.

This vital and timely story is paired with Jim Field's emotive illustrations in this gorgeous Christmas picture book, perfect for the whole family to share. The story then moves onto him wishing that Mia can continue her love for others and nature but he worries for the future of the planet. Then comes the slight twist, a very clever way of guiding the reader into thinking about pollution, global warming and how our day-to-day lives could be affecting experiences, and therefore the memories of others in the future, all whilst on the theme of Christmas.Well, Michael’s beautiful, emotional words speak volumes and the book is about a very serious subject, protecting our planet and each other.

I do like the message behind the story, of course we need to take care of our planet and children need to be aware of this. The story and pictures are so poignant and Michael Morpurgo has delivered the message within the story in a creative way.Although the name of the book suggests it is a Christmas story, Christmas is not the focus of the book. These are topics that could be covered in science but also PSHE if the theme was pollution/looking after the environment. Author Luke Palmer introduces his new book, Play (Firefly Press) about four boys growing up together, the challenges, the friendships, and what hap. His first picture book Cats Ahoy won the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and he has been nominated for several other awards including the Kate Greenaway Award and the Sainsbury's Children's Book Award. Mia’s all grown up and she has a family of her own, but every year at Christmas she takes out the letter her grandfather wrote when she was a little girl.

Grandpa Christmas – HarperCollins Publishers UK

A Christmas story like many others, about celebrating, happiness, families, gathering around the tree, sharing presents, but with a point to make about what is bigger than all of this, the world around us, our home, and what we have done and are doing to it that damages it, not just for us, but for the creatures and nature all around us.Within this letter are personal memories; of the times they spent in the garden finding frogs, planting seeds and watching closely as nature unfolds its' wonder in that quiet, determined way nature has.
