About this deal

An updated show, again hosted by Mortimer, was broadcast by the channel in 2010, to coincide with the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In her latest work, she’s adapted Thomas’s Under Milk Wood – a radio drama he first started writing when he was 17 – for an illustrated children’s book. I understand I can change my preference through my account settings or unsubscribe directly from any marketing communications at any time. After being commissioned, Shooting Stars ran for five series between 1995 and 2002, with a special anniversary edition broadcast in December 2008. And although I can’t imagine non-fans emerging anything other than baffled, those who are used to his brand of weirdness will find that the book works well as a thriller, too.

Mortimer appeared on BBC Two's Never Mind the Buzzcocks on four occasions – in 1996, on Sean Hughes' team; in 2000, on Phill Jupitus's team; in 2008, as a guest team captain; and in 2012, as a guest host. It contains the funniest description of somebody having a bath that you're ever likely to read… But there is genuine tension at times, and I came to believe in and care about the central characters. Bob Mortimer is the latest celebrity to follow a bestselling memoir with fiction, in this case a crime novel set in drab south-east London. Kaur’s first case is that of Tory MP and vocal climate-change denier Garfield Rice, found dead at his school reunion. He then moved to a private practice in Peckham, where his work with Public Health Act cases regarding cockroach infestations of council properties led to a local paper, the South London Press, dubbing him "The Cockroach King".

When the police arrive on Gary’s doorstep the next morning saying Brendan is missing and he was the last person to see him alive, the book takes all sorts of twists and turns. He enjoys his job, as it’s a short walk from his Peckham flat to the office via a nice stroll in the park. Mortimer has also just penned the foreword to How We Fish: The Love, Life And Joy Of The Riverbank by Whitehouse and the show's fishing consultant John Bailey, published 14th September by Mudlark. Gary Thorn is in the middle of investigating a serious criminal case in south London involving police corruption, domestic violence, possibly even murder, when he stops in the street to speak to a passing squirrel. And I wouldn’t necessarily say this book is the exception, but there are some things that do make this book worth reading.

In July 2002, Mortimer fought and defeated Les Dennis in the BBC's first Celebrity Boxing match, as part of Sport Relief 2002. He has since stated that his appearances on this show have given him more recognition than any of his previous work. The show was not broadcast by the channel, for fear of offending Catholic viewers, though it saw a DVD release later that year. More than just a tour of the wonderfully weird mind of Mortimer, it works - for the most part - as a novel. Throughout, Newman’s voice is heard, offering a glimpse into the heart and mind of the Hollywood great we thought we knew, but didn’t.

At Manor Park – the sort of trendy comprehensive chosen by parents who are “too mean or too right on” to go private – Rice’s coterie included students who went on to be a famous actor, a guitarist in a well-known band, a Labour MP and the headteacher of the school. Rose Ransom, who has the highest status permitted to women under the caste system designed by (real) Nazi ideologue Alfred Rosenberg, is busy rewriting works of literature to ensure they are in accordance with the ideals of the regime. Far too many profanities for no reason that dilute their impact, a weird obsession with toilet humour that isn't funny.
