The most deliciously wicked experience in literature, this epistolary novel introduces us to the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont, who play cruel games of sexual conquest on their unwitting victims. When Claire meets Patrick Fogler they find that they are both more than a little obsessed with the French poet Charles Baudelaire who wrote poems about death and depravity. J. Finn’s The Woman in the Windowor the unreliable narrator of Paula Hawkins’s The Girl on the Train. Flashbacks shed new light on Human Abbie’s relationship with Tim, and how she found herself in his path in the first place.However, I still enjoyed the rest of the story, and I have to admit, I did end up Googling to find out more about “Les Fleurs du Mal” by Charles Baudelaire. The whole scenario of Believe Me is intensely cinematic, and will no doubt have the film industry beating a path to Delaney’s door – but it’s none the worse for that. It did feel a little stagey, but given the fact that Claire was an actress, this may well have been strategic on the author's part. A classic exposé of colonialism, Achebe’s novel explores what happens to a Nigerian village when European missionaries arrive.
