About this deal

However, with the lens being very light, I did feel as though the build quality wasn't up to scratch compared to theSigma or Samyang. Although this may have been down to the materials used for the lenses the Tamron just felt a little clunky for my liking. But this didn’t affect the performance of the lens:

24-70mm lens for Sony Alpha Cameras? What is the best 24-70mm lens for Sony Alpha Cameras?

The lens extends even further by almost 4cms when it's set to the 70mm focal length, with the shortest length at the 24mm focal length. The wide zoom ring offers an excellent grip but is very heavy in its action. The upside of this is that there is no zoom creep. There are clearly marked settings of 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 70mm. The lens extends when zooming. Interestingly, as mentioned, this is a parfocal zoom, so focus is held throughout the range. It is also held well. Most zoom lenses are varifocal and have to be refocused after every change to the focal length. The parfocal design could be useful for videography, although the stiffness of the zooming action might make a smooth change in focal length difficult. AF performance does keep up and is nice and snappy, courtesy of the linear sonic motor. Being the second heaviest lens at 886g, you do feel this one when carrying it. The weight was a bit more front-heavy when on my A7R IV, which I put down to the longer length of the lens at 136mm. However, it wasn’t uncomfortable when on the camera and over the shoulder. The Samyang AF 24-70mm F2.8 FE lens has a metal lens mount. It accepts 82mm filters via metal threads. The usability of the AF 24-70mm F2.8 FE lens has been developed and enhanced, taking into consideration not only the design but also the user's shooting environment. It has a micro-patterned rubber focus ring, so feels great to operate and weather-sealing also protects the lens from light rain, snow and dust. Starting with the native option from Sony. The G Master was what I would expect from a Sony lens and got the job done for my needs at the time. The autofocus functions worked the smoothest out of the 4 lenses which I put down to it being Sony's own native lens. This meant it worked great and was the most responsive.

Hands on: Samyang AF 24-70mm f/2.8 FE review

There was a time when the only negative point about Samyang's excellent lens range was that all were manual focus. No longer is this so. Already we have the very fine 50mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 35mm f/2.8 and 14mm f/2.8 AF lenses for full frame Sony FE mount. There is even an AF 14mm f/2.8 EF in Canon mount. Now the new Samyang AF 24mm f/2.8 FE for Sony full frame mirrorless cameras has arrived, the widest offering yet. This is a truly classic focal length, so let's see how it performs using the new Sony A7 III 24MP mirrorless body.

One of the key advantage of the Samyang is its custom mode allowing to transform the focusing ring into an aperture ring. It is the only one of the 24-70 F2.8 offering this feature , a key plus for video. Note that the new Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III VXD G2 A063 is also offering this feature With the lens set to its maximum aperture of f/2.8, there is some light fall-off in the corners, requiring you to stop down by at least 3 f-stops to completely prevent it.

The minimum focus distance of 0.35m is slightly shorter than in the Sony lens, enabling a slightly larger magnification ratio of 0.27x at the long end of the zoom range. A ‘Custom’ dual-mode switch is featured, which is nominally used for switching between autofocus and manual focus, but can be customized to set other functions like aperture control. Samyang says that additional functions will be added in the future, through firmware updates. The Samyang AF 24-70mm F2.8 FE is a fast standard zoom lens for Sony Alpha full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. The DG DN version of Sigma’s 24-70mm F2.8 Art is a redesigned mirrorless camera version of their DG OS HSM. Aimed at E mount and L mount mirrorless cameras it features three Aspherical Elements which gave it a superb quality, especially at the wider 24mm. Par-Focal: This function maintains focus on the subject when zooming in and out. It is a feature optimised for video shooting and normally seen on very expensive cine zoom lenses. Optical construction is 17 elements in 14 groups, including 2 Aspheric, one Hybrid Aspheric, 3 HR (High Refractive index) and 3 ED (Extra-Low Dispersion). The coating is Samyang's well established UMC. For improved bokeh, the diaphragm comprises 9 blades. The lens is also weather-sealed.Looking to upgrade your equipment?
