A Clash of Kings is the second of seven planned novels in A Song of Ice and Fire, an epic fantasy series by American author George R. R. Martin. It was first published on 16 November 1998 in the United Kingdom, although the first United States edition did not follow until March 1999. In May 2005 Meisha Merlin released a much-delayed limited edition of the novel, fully illustrated by John Howe. He is supported by Melisandre, a foreign priestess who believes Stannis a prophesied messianic figure. Renly is supported by the wealthy Lord Mace Tyrell, and has married Mace's daughter Margaery. Robb's mother Catelyn Stark meets with Renly and Stannis to discuss an alliance against Joffrey's family, the Lannisters, but she is unable to reach an agreement with them. Melisandre uses magic to send a shadow to assassinate Renly in the middle of the night, and Stannis besieges Storm’s End, Renly’s castle; after witnessing Renly's death, Catelyn and Renly's bodyguard, Brienne of Tarth, flee the scene. Joffrey Baratheon, a prince, becomes King. Sansa, a naive girl, becomes a mature lady who begins to understand the world. Bran, a young boy who dreams of becoming a knight, becomes the Lord of Winterfell. Throughout the story, many characters mature and grow in wisdom and experience as they face the reality of living in a corrupt world governed by sinister people. Arya’s resentment for the Lannisters, Chisiwyk, and Weese intensified as she experienced the suffering and hardship of the war. Tyrion’s resentment of his nephew grew to staggering heights as he realized the hateful mindset he had. Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias.’ After reading authors of the calibre of Robin Hobb and Steven Erikson I would have to say that George R. Ser Davos Seaworth, a smuggler turned knight in the service of King Stannis Baratheon, often called the Onion Knight. When Arya leaves King’s Landing, her journey of suffering begins as she beholds the grime nature of warring and battles. She runs from harm and even has to feed on worms to stay alive. The intense fighting causes her and others to act solely on survival instinct. Sansa Stark, eldest daughter of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Stark, held captive by the King on the Iron Throne at King's Landing In the Night’s Watch, a tone of looming danger ensues as Jon goes out to find his uncle. Gradually, the tone shifts to fear and terror as Jon discovers that Mance Rayder not only has a large army but has an army of giants and mammoths marching to destroy the veil that has kept Westeros safe for eight thousand years.
