Taco seasoning is another readily available option that you might already have in your pantry. This substitute also shares some common ingredients like: Hattis told TODAY, "It's really a combination of flavors that you find at the center of a lot of traditional Latin dishes. I think what makes ours unique is the clean ingredient list and the quality of the spices that we use. There's no filler. There's no artificial colors. Those are ridiculous things to be honest, to be a part of what sazón is. As a blend of flavors, those are not things that like two generations, three generations ago were even remotely considered to be a part of this root flavor and were brought in by bigger businesses looking to turn a better profit." The only change to your recipe that I made was to add a scant teaspoon of Saffron strands as well as, rather than a substitute for the Annatto seeds and the flavour was amazing! I figured that while some of my readers might appreciate the expediency of the ready-made product, others would welcome a way to limit sodium and/or avoid MSG, the latter of which is an allergen for many people.Chef Eric Rivera of Addo in Seattle, whose parents and grandparents are from Puerto Rico, says he tries to make sazón relatable to someone who has never tried it. "I tell people what it is, compared to the food they eat. … (It's like) an all-around spice that they'd normally use in their cooking like Lawry's or Tony Chachere's," Rivera told TODAY. "Sazón is the same thing. It's our all-around cooking spice, it's our thing. It's the foundation of it. You can pretty much find it in every dish in one way or another, you know, whether it's gonna be in the raw application or marinated into something or (in) soup or stew." The spices in Rivera's regular sazón are ground separately, leading to a spice mix with varying textures. Eric Rivera What is sazón made of?

Despite the fact that I ultimately ended up with a seasoning mix with flavor that rivaled the commercial brand, the process seemed rather cumbersome. Further research revealed that paprika is a fine substitute for annatto. It’s easier to find, is already ground, and won’t discolor everything it touches. Win-win-win! Chili powder (you can vary the amount to suit here, depending on whether you want a very spicy Mexican seasoning or not) Spices like ground coriander, cumin, garlic and onion powders are pretty common. The key ingredient to give that rich, red color to sazon is achiote powder.

Both Maisonet and Rivera make their own sazón at home, modifying the mild spice blend to their liking.

And since this blend is typically an all-purpose seasoning, you can replace it with anything that calls for the original mix.You may be used to shopping at your local ethnic market for spices you need for Latin recipes, but what do you do when the market is closed and you don’t want to wait to make those dishes? It takes just a few minutes to put this Mexican spice blend together, and then it is always on hand to scoop out to use in our Mexican dishes.
