Goddard, S, 2013. Songs That Saved Your Life - The Art of The Smiths 1982–87. 2nd ed. U.K.: Titan Books. P. 121 the only downside is they have put too much music on so the end of each side has a slight distortion... almost an hour of music in total, if someone did this on 2 LPs it would be amazing

News" (PDF). Record Mirror. 20 October 1984. p.6. Archived from the original (PDF) on 1 January 2022 . Retrieved 1 July 2022. The Smiths release a bargain price special album on November 2. 'Hatful Of Hollow' For John Peel on 18 May 1983 (broadcast 31 May): " Handsome Devil", " Reel Around the Fountain", "Miserable Lie", " What Difference Does It Make?" (all four songs were later released as the Peel Sessions EP) Cavanagh, D, 1993. Irreproachable: The Smiths: the very best of British?. Q Magazine, 1 December 1993. I have a love-hate relationship with this album. I absolutely love the great majority of songs on this, but I hate the fact that it is a compilation album with songs from their self-titled record. I hate that there is no structure or concept to it. No identity. Such a wasted opportunity. It irritates me like an uneven carpet does. These Things Take Time" features bass that is more prominent and drums that are less controlled than in the version from the "What Difference Does It Make?" 12" single. Sliding guitar figures accompany the chorus. Vote up content that is on-topic, within the rules/guidelines, and will likely stay relevant long-term. Hatful of Hollow reached No. 7 on the UK Albums Chart, remaining on the chart for 46 weeks. [12] In 2000, Q magazine placed the album at No. 44 on its list of the "100 Greatest British Albums Ever".

Quality is good, I won't say it has the clarity of the best out there, but it's certainly good enough.

A mysterious and wise man once told me, “The only Smiths record you’ll ever need is Hatful of Hollow”. To which I responded, from beneath my curly mop, “Really?” in an almost dismissive tone. This mystical stranger responded unequivocally with a nod that was so self-confident, the 13-year-old me had no choice but to take this as gospel. British album certifications – The Smiths – Hatful of Hollow". British Phonographic Industry . Retrieved 5 August 2023. I don’t follow what Morrissey says now, I don’t really care about how he carries himself nowadays. But what he said in his songs is just so incredibly strong, so relatable, so timeless. And his queer persona presented in his early works never fails to put a smile on my face. Because it makes fun of us, mere mortals captivated by superficial things like love, money, and fame. I have great respect for how ahead of the curve, and how unusual he was. In addition, the original single version of "Hand in Glove" is included, not the remixed version that appears on The Smiths. It features a fade- intro and fade-out, louder bass, and vocals that sound very distant. Recently got a copy of this, the format makes sense as the album's running time of 56 minutes is technically too long for a single LP, whereas 10"s can hold a maximum of around 15 minutes a side when cut at 33 RPM. I don't have an original LP to compare it to, but it certainly has a very decent, clear sound. However, side 1 is much louder than the other three sides, and sides 3 & 4 are pressed off-centre. Also worth mentioning is the fact that the heavy stereo effect for the first 7 seconds of 'How Soon Is Now' (most noticeable when listened to through headphones) is greatly diminished on this pressing (it almost sounds like mono!). It's nothing big, but it makes you wonder why it's different.

What Difference Does It Make?’ was recorded during a BBC Peel Session, and it has a natural, darker edge to the single version. You can hear Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke dovetailing beautifully. Transposed to a higher key, it provides an exciting alternative to the single version. THE IMPOTENCE OF ERNEST" is etched into the runout groove of side A. As well as being a pun on Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, it is an allusion to the impotence that Ernest Hemingway suffered in his final years. "Ian (EIRE)", etched on side B, refers to Marr's younger brother. Wolk, Douglas (18 November 2011). "The Smiths: The Smiths Complete". Pitchfork . Retrieved 25 September 2015. Underneath the music, I could hear the faint whispers of the stranger, in his distinctly Leeds accent, like a musical Banquo haunting me with cries of ‘Hatful of Hollow’ and ‘Only Smiths record…’ as I entered adulthood, I started to realise what the stranger meant.

Notes

Still Ill" opens and closes with a harmonica solo, and sounds less hollow and slightly slower than the version on The Smiths. We can get hold of a copy for you from one of our suppliers, but we cannot guarantee a delivery time. The current sleeve for Hatful of Hollow is the CD issue sleeve, featuring a cropped photograph of the otherwise unknown Fabrice Colette taken by Gilles Decroix. The original sleeve, pictured above, included a tattoo of a Jean Cocteau drawing on Colette's left shoulder, which Colette commissioned in June 1983 because he idolised Cocteau. The photograph is taken from a July 1983 special edition of the French newspaper Libération. [13] Additionally, the old cover had a large sky-blue frame with the legends "The Smiths" and "Hatful of Hollow" above and underneath the picture. Editions after 1987 feature the cropped version with the text superimposed, although the 2011 vinyl re-issue reinstated the original sleeve. Reel Around the Fountain" has duller-sounding drums and acoustic guitars than the version on The Smiths. The bass is more prominent, but the piano and organ parts are not included. It is also in a higher key than the version on The Smiths. My only gripe is that the disc came in a paper sleeve, which meant it was scuffed and a bit dirty. A dry brush helped though and there are no audible or other defects.
