Generally speaking, deep-rooted plants require two to three inches of substrate. Flourite is great if you’re not looking to alter the pH of your aquarium water. It also comes pre-washed, but it’s recommended that you give it a rinse before use, which can be done right in the bag. These compounds alone do not provide sufficient nutrients for most aquatic plants, so additional nutrients will need to be supplied for most plants either in liquid or root tab form. Fluval Stratum is composed of fragile particles that can be easily dismantled once mixed with hard and sharp pieces like gravel. One water change per day – You want to perform one 10% water change per day until you get the desired result. You will probably only need 1-2 water changes for the situation to improve. Changing too much of the water at once or performing too many water changes within a day can change the water’s chemistry and parameters. Remember – patience.

Is Fluval Stratum Dirty Water Safe for Fish?

Rough handling may cause some pellets to break, and the resulting dust and particles may cloud the water. I used it to setup my recent tank. I certainly seen an effect on KH / DH from it. Takes my tap water from GH 12 KH 7, to GH 6 and 3 before weekly water change. Too early to say if it will continue (tank setup in Dec). I didn't rinse before use and saw no clouding of water. I don't think it made planting any easier or more difficult compared to gravel. So far so good, I would use again. Once the stratum is dry, go ahead and add it to your tank. You can either put it in directly or mix it with some existing substrate. If you’re mixing it with other substrate, make sure that the ratio is about 50/50 so that the Fluval Stratum doesn’t overpower everything else. CaribSea Eco-Complete – This is similar to fluorite. It is sold in a 20 lb (9.1 kg) bag. Eco Complete is sold with some water already in it that supposedly helps to cycle your aquarium. This water throws off the conversion from mass to volume a bit, but I estimate each bag has 5.9 Liters.
