About this deal

If I only used this monitor to view images, I’d probably run it at its full 4K resolution. But menus look too tiny and are very hard to read at that size. Scaling it somewhat smaller helps a lot. For all my external storage, a TB 3 to TB 2 adapter solved the problem. But, not for my trusty Apple Cinema Display. While it still worked perfectly after all these many years, it did not work with my Thunderbolt 3 iMac.

System Preferences > Display > Arrangement makes it easy to indicate the physical position of the monitor. Scrolling the mouse from one monitor to the other is flawless. Assembly required attaching the stand and connecting the HDMI and power cables. The entire process took 15 minutes; I timed it. You’ll need a Philips screwdriver to attach the stand. However, even though the printed instructions are cryptic, you won’t have any problems assembling this.UPDATED Nov. 28, 2020, with tips I’ve learned after using this monitor for a year and half. They are posted at the end. Also, read my product review disclosure statement.] In addition to changing settings using the on-screen monitor controls – which can’t be screen captured, or I would show them to you – you can also adjust and calibrate the monitor using System Preferences > Display > Color. Your sense of color may be different than mine, which is fine. There are several controls you can adjust to make this look the way you want. When given HDR content, the display automatically shifts into the right mode and cranks up the brightness to deliver a more immersive experience. The monitor’s HDR capabilities are most often seen when watching compatible content on streaming services like Netflix, or when gaming with a compatible console.

For those who want to tweak this monitor beyond what its simple menu is capable of, LG includes the True Color Pro software. This can be used to optimise colour performance to make more use of the display panel’s wide colour spectrum. However, this software requires a physical calibrator and one isn’t included in the box so you’ll have to source that separately. If you mount the monitor vertically, say for display advertising, the image can be rotated using a software control. However, while the stand can be tilted vertically, it can’t be rotated For most users, these ports should give them everything they need. We connected a MacMini using the USB-C port and a couple of game consoles via HDMI. And because the USB-C port carries power as well as video and audio, the monitor can be used to charge a MacBook (or other USB-C laptop) while also acting as an external screen. The stand uses a wide arched foot that provides enough desk space immediately in front of the monitor to accommodate your keyboard when not in use, or make space for other desk items. When you first turn your Mac on, the monitor does not turn on. The power switch is located on the underside of the case, immediately under the LG logo. I’ve been using this monitor for a year-and-a-half and I’m still very happy with it. It’s been problem-free the entire time. But I’ve discovered two quirks you should know about:

This monitor has a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160, making it 4K. It also has a refresh rate of 60Hz via all of its inputs, offers HDR 10, and is compliant with the VESA DisplayHDR 400 standard. This isn’t the greatest version of HDR, and you can certainly find greater dynamic range and higher peak brightness on higher-priced monitors, but if this is a monitor used mostly for regular computer work you won’t be using HDR much anyway. It was a sad parting. When I upgraded my computer from a 2013 iMac to a 2017 27″ iMac, I also made the change from Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3. During our time with the LG 27UL850 we enjoyed the breadth of its capabilities. The IPS panel means colour and contrast remain consistent when viewed from any angle, while the resolution, HDR, brightness, response time and refresh rate are all good for working, gaming and watching video. The display doesn’t particularly excel in any one of those use cases, but in a world where we are all working at home more than ever, a do-it-all display is of more value than one that is superb at gaming but is overkill for spreadsheets and Zoom calls. You'll not only get UHD resolution and HDR but you can also expect a fast response time, decent brightness, an anti-glare screen for eye comfort, a heigh-adjustable stand and even bundled software to help tune the display to your exact needs. It's one of the best 4K monitors for your home office.

NOTE: One of my favorites is “Return to Initial Settings” which allows you to recover in the event you’ve so totally confused this monitor that nothing looks right.

It can also upscale regular SDR (standard dynamic range) content into HDR, using an algorithm to improve tone mapping and luminance. It’s not true HDR, but a nice feature to have nonetheless. The monitor has a pair of 5W speakers, and while LG boasts of its MAXX Audio technology, sound really isn’t the strong point here. It’s acceptable for general computer notifications and occasional radio and podcast listening, but if you want to play music or watch movies and TV you are much better off connecting the monitor, or your computer, to a separate speaker or audio system. The stand is both curved and wide, running about 2/3 the width of the entire display. While stable, the stand makes it awkward for the monitor to share space with other devices on a desk. However, when powered on, the stand essentially recedes into invisibility, so that all you are looking at is a lovely image. While the monitor resolution is 4K, I get the best-looking images by scaling the resolution down slightly to 2560 x 1440. This also means that application menus are clear and easy to read. LG makes lovely display panels. Colors are clean, resolution is crisp, the image holds up extremely well, even when compared to the 27″ iMac it is sitting next to. In fact, I ran the Apple Display calibration software when I first connected the display. It was right on, no adjustments were needed. The only disadvantages to this monitor is that it connects via HDMI, which requires a converter cable for all iMacs, and all adjustments are made using a multi-purpose toggle switch at the bottom center of the bezel. So, I needed to get a new monitor. After extensive online research it came down to the Apple / LG UltraFine 4K Display, sold by Apple, and the LG 27″ UHD 4K Display sold by a variety of outlets.
