About this deal

In terms of image upscaling, the processor is still very efficient. From SD content and live content up to 720p, 1080p and 4K, the TV did not show any obvious artifacts from the upscaling process. But keep in mind that the end result is always very dependent on the quality of the original content. The two most significant settings, though, are the Contrast Enhancer and Samsung’s Shadow Detail, the latter of which is new for 2020. Between these two, you can get an idea of just where the mid-range compromises lie in this reasonably priced TV. Taking a step down to SDR with The Amazing Spider-man 2 on Blu-ray, there’s a lot more for this set to get its teeth into, colour-wise. Watching the Times Square scene, it’s clear this TV upscales well. The shot over the neon-lit New York streets still shows tremendous micro dimming control. The lights of windows and advertising boards don’t spill into the nearby dark and the picture remains clean. Information about whether the stand can be dismounted. Usually, this is required for wall mounting. Apart from Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness and Colour, there aren’t many settings to worry about on this TV, however a couple of them are particularly significant.

Percentage luminance drop at 20 degree vertical angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white output Approximate width of the display. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the width is calculated from the diagonal and the aspect ratio.

Samsung delivers another affordable 4K TV hit

There are various panel technologies. Each has its own specific features - viewing angles, color reproduction, response time, brightness/contrast, production cost, etc. The image quality depends directly on the type of the display panel used. For a screen of this size, it doesn’t sound big, giving a sense of being hemmed in. That said, dialogue clarity is good and intelligible, and it has a decent grasp of detail: the creaks and groans of an abandoned village in The Rings of Power are nicely realised. The OTS Lite sound system does a decent job of placing the sounds on screen. Samsung’s set can, though, automatically switch into its fast-responding Game preset when it detects that a source compatible with HDMI’s ALLM switching feature has started to play a game. That Game preset gets picture lag down to a brilliantly speedy 9.8ms, too, while gamers may also be keen to explore the TV’s Gaming Hub, which brings together Samsung’s peerless roster of streamed gaming sources. There’s no appearance on the BU85000 of the Game Bar interface found on more premium Samsung TVs either. It does, though, support ALLM switching, where the TV can switch automatically in and out of its low-latency game mode. That game mode delivers a fantastically fast response time of just 10ms, too, which is pretty much as low a figure as you’ll find in the TV world, and there’s also Samsung’s Game Hub to consider, which carries currently the TV world’s largest selection of streamed gaming services. The dialogue is fairly murky, too. There’s no problem hearing or understanding what’s said, but it’s like listening with a layer of material between our ears and the characters’ voices.

The storage humidity shows the lower and upper humidity limit, which ensures safe storage of the display. Storing it outside these limits might damage the display. HDR10+ assistance helps, but we’re talking subtle amounts here. In Bad Times at the El Royale and The Suicide Squad, colours have a little more depth and range, although the spectacular-looking The Rings of Power appears flat in places – there’s simply not enough contrast, depth or richness in the BU8000’s colours to convey a truly three-dimensional image. That’s a positive, though. At a touch over 25mm deep for our 55-inch version, the chassis is enviably slim, and the bezels surrounding the screen are minimal too. It can be wall-mounted, of course. If you don’t fancy that option, though, and would rather stand your new TV on a surface, the Samsung’s feet are usefully close together, so your surface needn’t be as wide as the screen itself. Power supply and consumption Information about the power supply and consumption, energy efficiency class, etc. 110V Subtitle and audio description information spoken on the electronic programme guide more info panelIts screen bezel is a bit ‘budget special’, too, with its slightly chunky width and a brushed finish that’s probably supposed to conjure up thoughts of brushed metal but really just looks like what it is: plastic with thin horizontal lines in it. There is ALLM – automatic delay reduction mode. Note that with Game Mode enabled, the output latency (input lag) is 11ms. As always, this is an average between 1080p and 4K resolutions, so expect very similar performance regardless of the resolution you play at. Smart TV The static contrast shows the ratio between the brightest and the darkest color, which the display can reproduce simultaneously, for example, within one and the same frame/scene. The UE50BU8000 doesn’t set a great first impression by feeling pretty lightweight when you’re putting it together. There’s a lot of plastic and not much else going on here. There are limits to the amount of ‘designing’ that can be done to a TV at the best of times, and ‘the best of times’ most certainly does not include a mainstream range of aggressively priced televisions designed to appeal to as many folk as possible. So the BU8500 is an unremarkable looker.

The UE50BU8000 is a native 4K TV that supports HDR in the HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ flavours. Samsung continues to snub Dolby Vision, though, despite the format’s popularity elsewhere. The Samsung UE55NU8000 includes the company’s full Smart TV system, which uses the latest version of the Tizen operating system and is integrated with SmartThings. This allows you to monitor and control any smart devices in your home via an on-screen hub. The operating humidity shows the acceptable level of humidity, in which the display will function flawlessly. It sets a lower and an upper humidity level for safe operation and is measured in percentage. Experience clear picture and smooth performance with Motion Xcelerator. Samsung’s clear motion rate algorithms predict and automatically compensate frames, so your picture adapts as fast as your game. This clouding issue with HDR sources is much less likely to appear with SDR content; in fact, its good native contrast makes it a rather good SDR display.
