About this deal

This was a great idea, a little bit like Battleship games we use to play as a kid, but made to look much more professional in this format. The game was invented in 1970 and is played like a code breaker game. Mastermind International – BBC One London – 3 June 1982". BBC Genome Project . Retrieved 7 November 2014. Frank King doesn't really remember where he learned Bulls and Cows, the game that leaped from his subconscious and into Cambridge's ancient Titan computer. Teacher wins Mastermind title". My parents have always been geeks, although my mother has never really identified herself as such and my dad passed away a long time before I had the inclination to ask him. Their first years of marriage included a map of Middle Earth on the wall of their flat and Sunday mornings spent laying in bed listening to the new Douglas Adams show The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy on BBC Radio 4. They were also into gaming in the early years of it being a “thing”, my dad even wrote a poker game for the spectrum that played identically to modern online poker but he never thought to patent it. As a result, my sister and I have inherited a large collection of old classic board games from the 1970s that we played as kids. One of those games is Mastermind.

In the very first series of Mastermind in 1972, all of the finalists were women, leading people to speculate whether a man could ever win the show.

Yes it was original with its quirky setting with the big chair, the dimming of the lights and the ugly sounding buzzer when a contestant ran out of time. Also, it had it's clichés " now I've started" etc and "pass" The secret to mastermind from a contestants point of view was to call "pass" on a question if you had any doubts about the answer. You could them move onto a new question. If you were wrong you would be given the long-winded answer from Magnus and thus use up valuable time. Hosted by BBC journalist and presenter Clive Myrie since 2021, the new series of Mastermind will see 96 contenders follow the tried and tested formula of facing two minutes of questions on their specialist subject, followed by two and a half minutes on general knowledge. Q&A with Mastermind host Clive Myrie In 2013, Mastermind featured on the ITV show Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, as part of an Ant Vs Dec segment where Ant and Dec had to answer questions based around a school challenge they took part in. Ant won. Mastermind Champion of Champions was televised Monday to Friday at 7:30pm on BBC Two in the first full week of August 2010. It featured the winners of previous series of Mastermind. Popular board games in the 70s spent more time on Formica tables and dropping pieces into shag carpet than the next ten TV dinners combined. How many of these classic tabletop, family-sized diversions do you remember playing? Mastermind International – BBC One London – 7 April 1980". BBC Genome Project . Retrieved 7 November 2014. I used to do quite well in exams at school; I probably didn’t work as hard as some people throughout the year then I did OK on the exams,” she said. “Annoyingly,” she added sheepishly. The two players decide in advance how many games they will play, which must be an even number. One player becomes the codemaker, the other the codebreaker. [7] :120 The codemaker chooses a pattern of four code pegs. Players decide in advance whether duplicates and blanks are allowed. If so, the codemaker may even choose four same-colored code pegs or four blanks. If blanks are not allowed in the code, the codebreaker may not use blanks in their guesses. The codemaker places the chosen pattern in the four holes covered by the shield, visible to the codemaker but not to the codebreaker. [8]

John Humphrys stood down as host in 2021, with the BBC news journalist Clive Myrie taking over as Question Master, familiar to viewers as a regular presenter of the BBC News at Six and Ten. The highest overall Mastermind score is 41 points, set by Kevin Ashman in 1995, his specialist subject being "The Life of Martin Luther King Jr." Ashman went on to become six times IQA world champion. In addition he holds the record for the highest ever score on Brain of Britain and has been a member of the Eggheads since that series debut. Mastermind Champions – BBC One London – 1 May 1982". He would then play the music on keyboard with an over-the-top hellish sounding climax. In the last episode of " Is It Bill Bailey?" he followed on from this performance with a sketch where he was a contestant on Mastermind, and it was implied that his specialist subject was the microwave cooking instructions on supermarket ready meals. As the camera panned out it became evident that the chair itself was on a platter, slowly turning in a giant microwave oven.

De Bondt, Michiel C. (November 2004), NP-completeness of Master Mind and Minesweeper, Radboud University Nijmegen Even though there is no money at stake, the tension is built from the first bar of the programme’s theme tune, the aptly titled ‘Approaching Menace’ (composed by Neil Richardson) and the studio lighting, which isolates the contender and the question master in an almost gladiatorial fashion. The 2003-onwards version has been spoofed by the Dead Ringers team, with Jon Culshaw playing John Humphrys. In one send-up, which appeared on the television edition of Dead Ringers, the contestant offered to answer questions on Mary Queen of Scots, but when an answer was given, John Humphrys was shown saying "Yes, but you sexed that answer up". The sketch was a reference to the controversy caused by the aftermath of the Iraq War. One episode included Mastermind: The Opera. [14] Mordechai Meirowitz, an Israeli telephone technician, developed Mastermind in 1970 from an existing game of apocryphal origin, Bulls and Cows, which used numbers instead of colored pegs. Nobody, by the way, knows where Bulls and Cows came from. Computer scientists who adapted the first known versions in the 1960s variously remembered the game to me as one hundred and one thousand years old. Whatever its age, it’s clear nobody ever did as well out of Bulls and Cows as Meirowitz, who retired from game development and lived comfortably off royalties not long after selling the Mastermind prototype to Invicta, a British plastics firm expanding from industrial parts and window shutters into games and toys. Start with initial guess 1122.
