About this deal

Portability isn’t a strong suit, but this mobile gaming PC is otherwise hard to fault. The Lenovo Legion 7 Gen 7 earns a well-deserved Editors' Choice award among high-end, 16-inch gaming laptops as the Gen 6 model did before it. We’ve boosted our rating by half a star for now including a fingerprint reader, USB 4 ports, and a sharper 1080p webcam. The AMD Legion's Ryzen 9 5900HX predictably proved faster than the Delta 15's Ryzen 7 5800H, but the Intel Legion wasn't to be caught with its Core i9-11980HK. Graphics and Gaming Tests The Legion 7 is pretty much as good as it gets when it comes to gaming laptops. It’s driven by the potent combination of the latest AMD Ryzen processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU. The display, meanwhile, is a 16in 2,560 x 1,600 (165Hz) number, with a slightly square aspect ratio of 16:10.

The 16in 2,560 x 1,660 IPS panel is a joy to look at. Bright and pin-sharp, it’s also impressively colour accurate and abundantly colourful. Brightness maxes out at a very respectable 490cd/m², while the contrast ratio is a solid 1,208:1. th Generation Intel ® Core™ i7-10875H Processorwith vPro™ (2.30 GHz, up to 5.10 GHz with Turbo Boost, 8 Cores, 16 Threads, 16 MB Cache)The Legion's fans aren't quiet, but the AMD model's seem to be better behaved than the Intel machine's, with less peak noise. Gaming with this laptop in a family room shouldn't create a disturbance. Productivity and Content Creation Tests The crosshair in the Legion logo on the lid also glows with RGB lightning too, creating a cohesive glow that will be the envy of your PC gaming rivals. Outside of the usual preinstalled apps like TikTok and Spotify, the handiest app is Lenovo Vantage Vantage has multiple settings to customize the laptop, including different performance modes depending on if you want silence or full-blown power.

The “Rembrandt” Ryzen 6000 series is AMD’s first mobile CPU to support DDR5 RAM. The Legion 7 Gen 7 uses the most powerful H- or HX-class versions with a 45-watt (W) thermal design power (TDP) rating. On the graphics front, the Radeon RX 6850M XT is the flagship AMD mobile graphics card and goes head-to-head with Nvidia’s flagship GeForce RTX 3080 Ti. FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, anti-glare, 240Hz, < 1ms response time, 100% sRGB, 500 nits, VESA DisplayHDR 400-certified, Dolby Vision™-enabled.For Windows PCs, we run both synthetic and real-world gaming tests. The former includes two DirectX 12 gaming simulations from UL's 3DMark, Night Raid (more modest, suitable for systems with integrated graphics) and Time Spy (more demanding, suitable for gaming rigs with discrete GPUs). Also looped into that group is the cross-platform GPU benchmark GFXBench 5, which we use to gauge OpenGL performance. Certain keys have their own hotkey functions when pressing Fn, showing their secondary uses. For instance, the Fn + Q key allows you to change performance presets from Auto, Quiet, and Performance (if connected to power.) There’s also an Fn + R key function that changes the display setting from the standard 165Hz to 60Hz, which comes in handy when trying to conserve power. Lenovo has been a bit of a latecomer to the world of gaming laptops, and the Legion 7 is the firm’s attempt to gain ground against big players like Asus and Alienware. Aesthetically, Legion laptops hide their gaming light under a bushel. Turn the light show off and it could pass as just another powerful workstation laptop. It should appeal to those who want a notebook for serious work as well as serious play.

Battery: These systems do not support batteries that are not genuine Lenovo-made or authorised. Systems will continue to boot, but may not charge unauthorised batteries. Lenovo has no responsibility for the performance or safety of unauthorised batteries, and provides no warranties for failures or damage arising out of their use. **Battery life is based on the MobileMark® 2014 methodology and is an estimated maximum. Actual battery life may vary based on many factors, including screen brightness, active applications, features, power management settings, battery age and conditioning, and other customer preferences. On Shadow of the Tomb Raider (highest settings, 1080p), the Legion 7 hit 97 frames per second during the benchmark at native resolution. This beats out the Alienware x17 and the Razer Blade 15 ’s 77 and 80 fps . However, the MSI GE76 Raider outperformed the Legion 7 at 106 fps. At its native 2560 x 1600, the Legion benchmarked at 71 fps, more than Razer Blade 15’s 54 fps at 1440p. None of this hardware is bad, but it’s a generation behind the curve – the Legion’s competitors have DDR5 memory and PCI-E 4 SSDs alongside newer GPUs and CPUs. Limits:Limit 5 per customer. Stay on task. And on target.

The Lenovo Legion 7’s Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 has a generous 165W power limit and it’s the beefier 16GB version of the GPU. It also features an AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with eight cores and a top speed of 4.4GHz. The Legion has 16GB of DDR4 memory and a 1TB Samsung SSD that produces middling read and write speeds of 3576MB/sec and 3013MB/sec. Across all of our performance tests, this laptop achieved scores that put it well above almost every entry in our best gaming laptops list. In our 3DMark tests, the Legion 7 scored 52,201 in Night Raid, 23,811 in Fire Strike and 10,709 in Time Spy whereas the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 (the device in our number one spot) only achieved 43,645, 21,211 and 9,333 in each test respectively. WQXGA (2560 x 1600) IPS, 500 nits, 16:10 aspect ratio, 165Hz (3ms response time), 100% sRGB, up to VESA DisplayHDR™ 400 Certified, Dolby Vision ® support, AMD FreeSync™ Premium, TÜV Rheinland ® certified If you like to use a bunch of peripherals, this laptop can more than accommodate your needs with its excellent number of ports. On the left side, you‘ll find a USB-C port (USB 3.2 Gen 2, DisplayPort 1.4) and an audio port for headphones. We tested the Lenovo Legion 7 with Windows 10 Pro, but most configurations now ship with Windows 11.

The wattage provided by the charger allows for peak gaming when powered on, but the battery life can be disappointing when unplugged, especially when gaming or doing other intensive tasks. But that's not to say unplugged longevity is bad for a gaming laptop. On our battery test, which involves streaming video, browsing the web, and running OpenGL tests over Wi-Fi, all with the display at 150 nits of brightness, the Legion 7 ran for 4 hours and 39 minutes. However, the Alienware now uses Intel’s Core i7-12700H and the Asus deploys the i9-12900H, and both score beyond 9500 points in that multi-core benchmark. The 5800H is not slow, but an Intel Alder Lake laptop or a newer Ryzen chip would all be better choices for content creation and tougher workloads. There are three removable shields surrounding the RAM and storage, two of which can be unscrewed with a similar screwdriver. Once those are off, you will see dual slots for M.2 SSDs on either side, and one already preinstalled (you can configure with two drives when you buy, or add more later). To access the RAM, you can just pull off the shielding with your fingertips. Battery Life on the Lenovo Legion 7 The AMD-powered Lenovo Legion 7 is a top-notch gaming laptop for enthusiasts who want next-generation gaming in a mobile form factor. The RGB-powered laptop screams gaming in every way through its well-thought-out design, from the surrounding lights and keycaps to its well-placed vents and speakers. The fans are also well behaved. Though audible while gaming, the noise is ultimately just a lot of air passing through the vents. There is little to no fan noise during general use.
