Right off the bat, I believe that Aeon’s End: Legacy is the best method for teaching the system to a new player. The boiling down of your mages to their sum parts makes the clarification of terms and analogy minimal. It was effortless to teach the new player for our campaign how things worked as instructions came up, giving them the room to get used to the way in which the mechanics work, before linking in a new mechanic to add to their knowledge.

Aeon’s End: Legacy of Gravehold is a co-op game for one to four players intended to be the final chapter in a story arc that began with 2019 release Aeon’s End: Legacy. Set within the city of Gravehold - a place that has undergone much hardship since breaches opened up inside - the upcoming board game provides players with a narrative filled with branching paths determined by their decisions. Great job by the designers in not just being creative and great in the story and effects of the stand alone game, but also being creative in how to push the boundaries of board games to make for a cool experience. Even though the Aeon’s End Legacy Campaign had me playing for 12 hours, I was always interested on the edge of my seat with everything flowing wonderfully. The strength on all fronts is what puts this one on the Best Legacy Board Games list. Thumbs up!Aeon's End: Legacy is my favourite legacy game. You heard right. I used to think nothing could top Pandemic Legacy Season 1, but I was wrong. This is a campaign that throws giant boulders at you, slaps you in the face with an axe, grinds your bones to a fine paste and showers you with... gifts? I love that each nemesis has its own player board, rules, cards and tokens, even rules of play. It means that subsequent fights aren’t just rinse and repeats of the previous ones, there’s real variety in what’s happening.

For established Aeon’s End fanatics, there is a decent amount of content to keep you entertained. Terminology and difficulty are both turned down so it feels less exciting at first, but for the kind of value it offers I can’t begrudge it. The most exciting part for me has been the new Nemeses more than the cards, but there are some cards I would love to test further. The prospect of building your own mage to play with in other Aeon’s End games post-campaign excites me, and I relish the opportunity to try them in active combat once I’ve reached the end of the campaign. Whilst the playing then buying cards feels very Dominion-like, the gameplay is totally fresh. There is a lot of cool stuff here. The legacy elements of Outcasts make the core mechanics of the game gel in a way that the core box doesn’t quite manage. An excellent entry in the series – and not a bad entry point if you don’t mind skipping ahead in the story.

UPDATE: The ability to have a more balanced selection of Basic Nemesis cards that draw from all the games has been added. Thanks to rngesus.wept for the suggestion! The rulebook, as with previous offerings, remains succinct, able to clarify key points simply while providing relevant examples. The separate first game sheet is also a welcome inclusion to lay out exactly how the game should look and feel before the first encounter. Components also remain much the same from previous outings: Both the tokens and life dials retain the tried-and-true formula of their brethren, and the cards remain consistent in quality and uniformity. I have encountered some minor problems such as slight miscuts here and there, but my past dealings with Indie Boards & Cards make me think that it won’t be an issue getting replacements should people have outliers in this area. UPDATE Feb 2022: Legacy of Gravehold has been added. Additionally the ability to setup the randomizers to use what set you want has been added. Pretty much a huge amount of work went into the last few updates. Enjoy. Outcasts adds some interesting new flavour to the mix, from a new mage, Taqren, who triggers benefits for allies every time he takes a punch, to the ‘wandering’ keyword which reduces all damage done to a minion to one. Other minions are similarly immune, only being able to be damaged by spells over or under a certain value.

But now that I’ve completed the game, there’s still a lot I can do, despite it being a legacy game. There are instructions for after the end that show how to battle the nemeses again, use randomiser cards to get different supply piles, and how to transport your character and all their unique equipment and abilities to other games in the Aeon’s End franchise. Welcome to Gravehold. Yes, it's as bad as it sounds. This is the last bastion of humanity, protected only by a group of 'Breach Mages'. You are a student of the craft, and your magic skills are... to put it kindly, like being caressed by a natural yoghurt. (Wow so many Mighty Boosh references lately). The Nameless won't stop coming. They want nothing more than to wipe you out and destroy your pitiful settlement. Only you haven't finished all your lessons. You'll have to learn by doing.
