About this deal

Coverage is respectable at 14 square metres per litre, though the drying time of up to 24 hours will alarm anyone working to a tight timescale — or anyone who’s simply impatient. It’s also worth noting that Johnstone’s markets this paint as containing 2-butanone oxime, which may cause allergic reactions. You have the traditional oil-based gloss, which turns yellow over time. Water-based gloss, which stays white forever, but generally leaves a substandard finish. Then hybrid gloss, which is a compromise between oil and water. To understand why gloss paint goes yellow, it’s important to first understand the two types of gloss paint available within the UK. Gloss paint, sold in either oil-based or water-based formulas – with oil-based gloss paint the most popular choice among homeowners. Last but not least, you want a foam roller for the larger flat areas. These help you apply an even layer of gloss in less time, thus achieving a better finish. Any foam roller will do, but the Rota Concave stands out as the best, simply because their shape means you avoid tram lines. Available online here.

As a decorator, the question “which is the best white gloss” comes up regularly. It used to be a simple choice, but now the range of gloss paint products are exponential. We’re not just talking about more brands (of which there are many), but there are also different types of gloss paint. Our ultra-tough paint is best applied when the temperature is above 10⁰c. It’s low odour so there’s no lingering smells but you might still want to open a window or door for a little bit of extra ventilation. This particular gloss comes in a variety of colours including cream, white, barolo, victory red and vine green. While some paints can leave a strong odour for a lengthy period of time, you won’t get that problem with Brilliant White

We’re big fans of the Ronseal One Coat and would recommend it over any other when it comes to gloss for radiators. If you really want a nice finish with this, we’d recommend giving your radiator a clean and sand down any rusty bits leftover from the old paint. Optionally, you can prime the radiator first with something like BIN Primer. Bit of a mad subject this. All oil-based gloss will discolour over time due to restrictions on the VOC’s (chemicals) a manufacturer is allowed to use. The oil in oil-based gloss is an alkyd, and like all alkyds, it will discolour. The best you can hope for is to get a few good years out of it before the oil in the gloss begins to bleed through. If conditions are right, you will not notice the problem of discoloration with Dulux Trade gloss. The yellowing of gloss paint is such a big issue for many homeowners because of the unappealing shade that develops over time causing the once fresh and bright finish to turn dull and creates an almost dirty look to the surface. So, it’s no wonder that people looking for white gloss paint that doesn’t yellow has increased. If your existing paint is in a good condition, your job here is easy. Just lightly sand it with 240 grit sandpaper and then apply a primer and undercoat. Water-based or hybrid gloss products are a bit different. You need a synthetic brush, capable of holding its shape for prolonged periods. There is no point opting for an overly soft bristles either, or you will struggle. I’d suggest the Hamilton Prestige Synthetic Brush, which gives you everything you need at a reasonable price. Available online here.In 2010 came the introduction of the European Union’s Industrial Emissions Directive (IED – Directive 2010/75/EU) which puts emission limits on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) contents within industrial activities. This directive is then enacted in the UK by the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 SI 675. The result is a restriction of VOC contents within the paint industry. It’s important to clarify that Rustins’ entry on this list isn’t necessarily a direct competitor to Dulux and Johnstone’s. Rustins markets this product as “small job” paint, sold exclusively in 250ml tins, which means it’s not a whole-house product. Indeed, it would cost many times more than the other two if you were attempting to cover much more than the 3.25 square metres you can expect from a tin of this size. We’ve included this category because we’ve had many customers in the past ask us if it was even possible to paint your radiator. The short answer – yes it is.
