Play a word game together taking turns to boast about (an imaginary) dad. My dad is as fast as a ….. My dad is as big as a….. My dad is so clever he can….etc. Play a card game Anthony Browne". Walker Books. Archived from the original on 14 December 2007 . Retrieved 26 December 2007.

This is a fantastic video introducing Anthony Browne and I recommend it if you aren’t familiar with his books. At 8 mins 50 seconds he also talks about the dressing gown and how it inspired his writing. What is brilliant is the typical ‘fantastic’ description we assign with mothers is contrasted by descriptions of how she can also ‘roar’ like a lion. This can help children understand and discuss the role of parents. What is the job of a mum? Similes are used in Browne’s descriptions, ‘my mum’s as beautiful as a butterfly’, with brilliant illustrations that extend the meaning of the text. In particular, ‘My mum is...a brilliant juggler’, Browne has the mother juggling a tea pot, house, car and a purse to name but a few. Children who find decoding text difficult could use the pictures to help them access and understand the words and text. The similes and pictures can be used to explore creative and descriptive writing as an example to extend vocabulary and creativity. Children can discuss and come up with their own similes to describe their mothers or other family members. The pictures are extraordinary and unforgettable and celebrate dads in a way few books do Independent Browne and writer Annalena McAfee won the 1985 Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis, Picture Book category, for Mein Papi, nur meiner! (The Visitors Who Came to Stay). He also won the Kurt Maschler Award "Emil" three times, which annually (1982 to 1999) recognised one British "work of imagination for children, in which text and illustration are integrated so that each enhances and balances the other." [15] Browne was a winner for Gorilla (Julia MacRae Books, 1983), Alice's Adventure in Wonderland (MacRae, 1988) and Voices in the Park (Doubleday, 1998), as the illustrator of all three books and the writer of two. Retailers:

My Dad by Anthony Browne is filled with creative illustrations with inspiring details. The picture book is a rich starting point for all sorts of creative projects. As Father’s Day is fast approaching in the UK it is also a very special gift for any Dad. I particular like the part where it says "my mum could be a dancer, or an astronaut. She could be a a film star (with a Marilyn monroe's look-alike picture of the mum) or the big boss. But she's MY mum". I think this is really the essence of the entire book: regardless of how she is and what she does and what she loves as a hobby or career, she is my mum, and that is the most important part. Compare to some other books about fathers, for example; Some Dogs Do by Jez Alborough, Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl.

Hans Christian Andersen Awards". International Board on Books for Young People ( IBBY). Retrieved 23 July 2013. Can you make funny faces together like the one dad is making on the cover or other funny faces? Children could look in a mirror to see what they look like. Act the story

Talk about

Flood, Alison (9 June 2009). "Gorilla artist Anthony Browne becomes children's laureate". The Guardian. However, this book is not a favourite of 23-month old little-AJ. In fact, he avoids this book whenever he can. His expression looked doubtful whenever this book was read to him, like he wasn't too sure what exactly this book was all about. He is probably unable to associate his mum as the brown hair woman with floral prints all over, with drastic transformation of appearance from Lion to rhinoceros to a little kitten and butterfly and superwoman. Tony Bradman, "Through the magic mirror: the work of Anthony Browne", British Book News, 1984 Autumn [Children's Books], pp.2–5. The young narrator of this sweet, heartwarming picture-book tribute to mothers describes his own mom's many wonderful qualities, from her skills as cook and juggler to her butterfly-like beauty and armchair-like comfiness. He concludes with the declaration that he loves his mom, and that she loves him, and always will...
