About this deal

Valid from October 1-13, 2022 or while supplies last. For those living in Australia, the promo gift set is now sold out at LEGO Shop at Home Australia. Ray the Castaway is a fan design submitted by DadiTwins, and as you can see from the original design, has mostly kept the aesthetics and overall look, with a few small tweaks. On the side of the shelter, there’s a fishing road with a fish that is caught. A yellow cup is near the shelter for Ray to sip on. The raft can be attached to the shelter too through the rope.

Design-wise, I like how closely they kept to DadiTwins’ original design, and how it’s so immediately recognisable. Congratulations to David and Diego! Please help us in congratulating them in the comments. Photos of the incredible set: Ray is fortunate to have been castaway on a very pleasant-looking island, with lush vegetation, colourful animals and vibrant blue sea surrounding it. He's been able to fashion a shelter from available resources and looks to have an abundant supply of fish for sustenance. As a result, it holds very true to a lot of the charm and creativity that made it a winning entry, even if that means that there are no new or exclusive parts to be found here. It’s a cute little creation that tells so much of a story in so little real estate, and the fact there’s only one minifigure is part of the point. One of the only changes that is a downgrade is the seagull has come out in place of a parrot.

Details

Oh, and MASSIVE shoutout to my wife for building and photographing the set while I’m away in Billund! Dumping out the contents, you get a instructions booklet and five bags of pieces. Note that they are not numbered. However, its not unusual as this set isn’t that big.

This set does sport ten palm fronds in three shades of green, which is quite nice for a set of this size. It’s definitely the parts highlight of the set, especially if you can rustle up the missing pieces for a third palm. That said, Ray the Castaway is a bit of an exception, as it didn’t go through the typical 10,000 votes and review round process, as it was the winning entry in the Do You Want To Go To The Seaside LEGO Ideas competition, following in the footsteps of recent LEGO Ideas GWPs like 40533 Cosmic Cardboard Adventures, 40448 Vintage Car and 40487 Sailboat Adventures, The twins, Dave and Deigo have submitted their latest creation to the LEGO Group’s official “ Do You Want To Go to the Seaside?” contest – the submission with the most vote gets made into a set. You continue with the desert island by building the shelter and adding more details. Now, we have the fishing rod with the fish, a yellow cup, cooking pan and a small fire. There’s a small beach section, with a bottle (presumably with a message in it), and a really clever SOS sigh fashioned out of dead grey eels and a yellow Life Preserver, spelling it out.LEGO IDEAS 40566 Ray the Castaway is a really neat and cool set that has lots of playable features. Although its small, LEGO fans can recreate many castaway scenes on the desert island. These include cooking with the campfire, exploring all the small animals nearby, resting in the shelter, enjoying the shade under the nice palm trees or exploring the oceans with the raft. Overall, this is a nice set. The complete set took about 45 minutes to build and that includes sorting the pieces too. There are lots of details in this set and they include 2 snakes. A yellow swim tube is also here too. There’s a nice clear beer bottle and there’s a starfish too. I particularly like the use of the brown 6-pronged stalks under the palm tree's leaves to replicate its flowers. Winners Announcement – We’ll share the Grand Prize winner and five Runner Up winners here on LEGO Ideas no later than May 31st, 2021!
