About this deal

No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Highland Park’s standard 12 year old was the dram that launched my passion for whisky and I will always have a soft spot for it as a result. Having said that, I sometimes find their excessive reliance on the Viking stuff a bit of a turn-off. A wee story to go along with my dram is always welcome but it sometimes feels like the heavy-handed marketing obscures the quality of the liquid. For that reason it is a brand I have wandered away from over the years but recent tastes of Full Volume and Valfather showed me that I could still enjoy the spirit of this particular distillery. Dragon Legend, despite sounding like it was named by an over-eager adolescent that enjoys tabletop role-playing games, is a rather satisfying dram that I have been enjoying more than I expected to. It’s more in-your-face than the core range but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing and there remains enough of a recognisable trace of the distillery character to please diehards. First released in 2017 “Dragon Legend” is a smokier version of the Highland Park single malt, named after the legend of Sigurd, who slew Fafnir the serpent in service of the Gods. In this old Norse tale, Odin and Loki, gods of Asgard were travelling in disguise in our world, or Midgard. Stopping to rest at a small dwelling, the Gods were robbed of their gold by Fafnir and his brothers. A crime that was to have dire consequences for those involved. Highland Park Distillery stands on a hill overlooking the town of Kirkwall – largest settlement and administrative centre of Orkney, an archipelago to the north of Scotland.

On the nose: Dried cut grass, or a walk through a freshly baled field, maybe stopping of for a glass of sherry or red wine on the way. Some slight candy sweetness. Highland Park offers its range of whiskey in four categories. They are available in the core range, travel retail range, special editions, and archive. It adds an aromatic smoky flavor to the whiskey. The company still uses the traditional and labor-intensive process of production. They use the process of floor malting and turn the barley with their hands every day. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. The weather condition of Orkney island is highly favorable in the maturation of the whiskey. The flavor notes of the whiskey are also infused with the character of fruits and spices.Consumption of moderate amounts of whiskey is also very advantageous to health. It raises the amount of good cholesterol in the body that helps to lower the risk of heart disease. Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). Finish: Medium in length with a good balance between sweetness and oak bitterness. Slight astringency. Highland Park is a peated whisky, but for many it’s a more accepted peat, perhaps lighter and easier on the palate. Tt can push the boat out on some expressions but – being honest – if you’re a peat fan there are many other drams to explore away from Highland Park to satisfy your fix. Even my friend Mark who admits to “not enjoying peat” actually enjoys Highland Park… go figure. Highland Park 10 Year Old “Viking Scars” – Review Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819.

On the nose: A subtle sherry influence, and again a subtle smoke lingering, slightly spirity, but not spicy. Fafnir was selfish and refused to share the loot. Consumed by greed, he killed his siblings. Cursed by the Gods for his crimes, his physical form began to corrupt and change in terrible ways until he had transformed into a gigantic bloated worm that slept all day atop its hoard of gold.

More From Highland Park

Orkney and much of the north of Scotland was colonised by Norway in 875 AD and the Norse influence can still be widely seen on the island today, a connection the distillery likes to celebrate through its branding and marketing. In the mouth: It’s quite a deep dram, in that there is a slight intensity initially, perhaps thoughtful on the initial sip. Fruity, juicy, perhaps an herbal tea, and that compost heather style of a peaty smoke, coated in a wee sweet case. On the finish: pepper, spice, herbs, smoke… longish. Conclusions The company still uses the process of turning malt by hand. Their hard work and effort in every grain results in delivering the aromatic smokiness. This key process of products makes Highland Park distinctive from others. Nothing in the Terms shall exclude or limit our liability for fraudulent misrepresentation or for death or personal injury resulting from gross negligence or willful misconduct by us. The sweet characteristics slightly overpower the smoke, as with the nose, which is nice but you do occasionally wonder how natural the sweetness is as the finish is quite dominant and almost chocolaty.

Highland Park is one of the few distilleries that follows the traditional method of floor malting. The brand uses the labour-intensive process of regular hand-turning barley before being kilned with Orkney peats. In the core range, you can explore their collection of whiskey aged from 10 to 50 years. All the whiskey has distinctive flavor notes. In this range, the brand offers a special collection of Magnus and Dragon Legend. The usage of five keystones in the production makes Highland Park whiskey stand out from the rest. The company uses the peats from the island of Orkney. These are woodless but high in heathery. After a while, the finish is when a little oak from the barrel comes in. It’s quite subtle which is actually a nice change as a lot of scotches have a very prominent oaky flavour.
