Shelve The Name of the Wind beside The Lord of the Rings…and look forward to the day when it’s mentioned in the same breath, perhaps as first among equals.”—The A.V. Club While I write the books myself, publishing them is a team effort. And as many of you already know, my publisher is DAW, and my editor is Betsy Wollheim. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. And I desperately want to know just how many people are involved in surreptitiously keeping Auri alive. The art also really helps to make this book. It's really integral to see what Auri sees so you feel more connected with her doings.

This is mainly focused towards all you keyboard warriors out there. I'm being a bit of a hypocrite right now, I know. I hate the thought of disappointing people. And this is something that I didn’t understand until I was a parent. The more someone loves you, the more you have the ability to disappoint them. I love my little boy, and I get so irritated with him sometimes. Oot loves me beyond all reason and sense, and when I tell him no, I have hours of work to do, I can’t play, his face falls. Then he smiles a fake smile at me and tells me it’s okay. He’s only five and he already knows how to fake a smile to hide his disappointment. It breaks my heart.” It’s just a complete mess. There is truly no plot or any excitement. It gave me no reason to read it. It is a glimpse at Auri’s life, which is to say the whole thing is a young girl exploring a whole lot of nothing. It’s dull, painful and redundant. I couldn’t get into it. Well, I say nothing because Auri hasn’t got a clue where she is. She is like a child in a vast and complex world. She perceives things in an oddly unique manner. This isn’t bad in itself; it just makes the whole thing hard to follow because it is so easy to form misconceptions. Auri just seems lost within herself as well as the world at whole. I hated it in its entirety. It is a rare and great pleasure to find a fantasist writing…with true music in the words.”—Ursula K. LeGuin, award-winning author of Earthsea There was a tension in the air. A weight. A wait. There was no wind. She did not speak. The world grew stretched and tight. So what we’re left with here is an entirely pointless and plotless novella about an OCD girl mired in feng shui issues. any means, without the prior permission in writing of the publisher, nor to be otherwise circulated in any Unlike (apparently) every other right-thinking fan of fantasy literature, I wasn’t the biggest fan of ‘A Wise Man’s Fear’, for I thought Rothfuss had tried too hard to create a similarly ‘lovingly crafted’ book and instead provided us with a book that only appeared lovingly crafted. Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. Plus I’m curious about what she thinks and feels about Kvothe. <3 They are certainly an interesting pair. XD

Well, if I would have been Auri I probably most certainly would have squealed like a little cat, but thankfully Auri is more dignified than I and no scaredy-cat when it comes to slippery creatures in dark water. This said I wish that I would be more like her. Well, truth be told, it wouldn’t hurt if everyone would be at least a little bit more like her. ;-) I just loved the way this book was written. Yes, it was an unconventional novella and didn’t follow the rules of a normal story but even though there didn’t happen a lot and even though this story had absolutely no plot, it still worked somehow?! I think it mainly lived from the atmosphere and the way Auri perceived her environment. And Kvothe for that matter! It’s obvious she’s in love with him and it was nice to know that my theory actually had a real foundation. ;-P Ever since book two was delayed more than a decade ago, I’ve promised y’all that when a new book is going to be coming out, you’ll hear the news from me first. In general, the book does not care for a plot, being all about the main character, Auri, trying to convey the way her mind works and her feelings and views of the world of Temerant and Kvothe, while also giving the reader a demonstration of her powers and magic, which is exposed on the very end of the book, when she uses her magic to create the candle she gives Kvothe as one of her three gifts. The book is your child in many metaphorical ways but (and I hate to say this too you) you know damn well that there are things WAY more important than words for commercial sale. I have two kids of my own, not so different in age from Oot, and I absolutely second everything you say. Y’know, we *totally* understand. She knew exactly where she was,” goes one of her regular refrains. It’s exactly where she is that makes Slow Regard more than just a well-written supplement to a larger story. It all began when Pat Rothfuss was born to a marvelous set of parents. Throughout his formative years they encouraged him to do his best, gave him good advice, and were no doubt appropriately dismayed when he failed to live up to his full potential. When you create something people like, they want to know when you’re going to make a similar thing so they can enjoy that too. If they like it a *lot* then they *REALLY* want to know when you’re doing it again. I have, of course, been called many other things. Most of them uncouth, although very few were unearned. I was writing a trunk story. For those of you who don’t know the term, a trunk story is something you write, then when it’s finished you put the manuscript in the bottom of a trunk and forget about it.
