About this deal

Italy and the Cavallera house are described so well I felt like I was a part of the furniture. The atmosphere is captured so beautifully right from the outset, Eva’s unsettledness and her general unease comes across in a very striking way. Eva is drawn in by mysterious Dante and his two children and as a reader I felt the same. The way my emotions and feelings towards them altered throughout the novel was surprising. I didn’t expect there to be such a rollercoaster of discoveries. The web of secrets, lies and history make for a compelling read. When asked why he returned to The Sandman, Gaiman said he began to feel guilty that almost no one had been able to return to the series since its conclusion and liked the idea of reviving it, as well as letting new writers play with his "toys". Gaiman assembled the writing team for the line with the Vertigo editorial team. Both parties suggested writers who they thought would be good for new Sandman stories. Samples by writers were then read by Gaiman, who decided whether or not they were proficient. Choosing writers also involved deciding which comic suited which writer best. Gaiman cited Nalo Hopkinson's science fiction work as an influence for assigning her to House of Whispers. Gaiman chose Kat Howard, who he has worked with for several years, to reboot The Books of Magic because of her handling of magic in her stories, and Dan Watters to write Lucifer because he was up to the challenge of recreating the character. [3] Titles [ edit ] Soon she starts to wonder whether the house itself is trying to give up the secrets of its mysterious past - secrets that Dante seems so determined to keep hidden.

My love is a grasping thing. A vine I cannot extricate myself from, pulling me down, down. It is dragging me all the way to Cornwall". "Anger has ever been a failing of mine. When it surges, it sings in my veins like a dram of gin. Any action seems possible, reasonable. It is only afterwards, when the fire fades, that I see the dark soot-stain of what I have done".Oh, I do love a tale of toxic friendships, and this one is a belter. I read this in one day, constantly screaming (in my head) at the characters, there's a sense of dread and anticipation woven throughout the story that made my heart pound in places. Also, the use of same content now feels like a copy paste. The spooky house, the creepy staff, a furniture related to the story (in this case, the china). I personally don't want to read the same book that feels like it's built over a formulation. I would like to see some originality even if it's the same writer.

I really enjoyed this read because I was fascinated by the characters of Grace and Abi: how they interacted with one another and the change that occurs over the story. The whispers of the past between the two are seemingly embodied by the house, with plenty of unexpected developments along the way. Hester Why arrived in Cornwall with a hope for a fresh beginning as the new live-in nurse. Running from her troubled past, little did she know Morvoren House held its own secret, festering into the household in the last 40 years. As she tried to help them with the truth, she must toe it delicately or risked shattering everything she believed in. There is an incredible balance in "The House of Whispers" that seems to come solely from the author's talent: there is ghostly, paranormal, frightening horror. And then there is real, accurate and violent horror, that stems from society itself, from the way it is divided and corrupted by hate and incomprehension of another that is different. Now, the gothic elements in the story were expertly introduced over the chapters. Reading Eva's hauntings, her fear and anxiety inside the house... Everything was carefully added to create an eerie, uncomfortable and unsettling atmosphere. Right from the moment she enters the house, the reader's instinct is to yell at her to run. I usually am not a fan of horror, but I really enjoy the way Anna Mazzola writes it and I think it is one of her strong points! I really wasn’t keen on the animal cruelty part of the plot which some might find upsetting so a little bit of a warning there. Aside from that this is a fantastically clever book which is original, compelling and captivating. And which might put you off making new friends!

Mazzola also finds it necessary to handhold her readers through the entire thing: the story is told in retrospect by main character Eva, so we already know she makes it out fine; and every time some ghostly stuff is going on, this gets pointed out with blinking neon signs. Ie, vase falls to the floor without anyone touching it, cue Eva’s narration, “in hindsight I should’ve been worried about this.” Ya we know. A vase just decided to jump off the table. We know this means there’s some haunting going on.

As with “The Silent Companions”, Purcell again creates a claustrophobic, eerie, dark, gothic atmosphere around Morvoren House. And again, just like the companions, the fairies feel like a malignant presence, always watching. At times I almost felt I was trapped alongside Hester in the cold, dank china room. With this book Purcell has proven that she is, or is well on her way to becoming, a master of this genre. The House of Whispers is a deeply unsettling read, examining a turbulent time in history through a very personal lens. Overall: I loved the characterization and I enjoyed slow building, ultra disturbing, extremely toxic story of two wild women who are doomed to be each other’s moth to a flame. Welcome to the House of Dahomey, the houseboat of Erzulie Fréda, where the souls of Voodoo followers go when they sleep to beseech the flirtatious and tragic goddess to grant them their hearts' desires and counsel them on their futures and fortunes. When you arrive, you'll find a party is in full swing, filled with all kinds of fabulous and fierce folk, while fish fry and music blasts. From her bayou, Erzulie scries upon the mortal realm and sees four human girls open a mysterious and magical journal filled with whispers and rumors that, if they spread, could cause a pandemic unlike any the Earth has seen, with the power to release Sopona, the loa lord of infectious disease and cousin to Erzulie, who is currently banned from the human plane. But even the fearsome Erzulie cannot be of assistance when her dream river turns tumultuous, tossing her house from her realm and into another... Eva is the main character who marries a widower and goes to live with him and his daughter. She met when she went to teach his daughter piano. Whilst in the house, she sees and hears things that seem strange to her. A vase smashes for no reason…and that’s just the start. As the world implodes outside, the house seems to reflect that with the strange goings on within. I thought this was nicely done and the atmosphere built up slowly and carefully.Once Grace moves in, we see that nothing has changed. As Abi works on a new set of paintings for her upcoming exhibition, Grace can’t help but insert herself into Abi’s life in overbearing ways, just like before. Will Abi finally be able to stand up herself, or is Grace here to stay? An artist and her high-flying businessman husband move into an old house that contains the remnants of a child's belongings. As soon as they move in, the husband has to go away on a trip so an old university friend comes to stay. But all is not well. Dominike "Domo" Stanton / Isaac Goodhart (pg. 10-11) / Amancay Nahuelpan (pg. 15-16) / Aneke (pg. 17-18) Let’s take a look at the plot: Abi successfully rewrites her life story after painful, traumatic teen years by forming a full filled relationship with her husband Rohan. And first time she goes against his wishes: convincing him to buy an old house which needed hell of a job! But she needs a distraction after the dry spell about her artistic works( she’s under a lot of pressure as the next exhibition date of her paintings approaches)

Will Eva be able to carve a new life for herself and the children trapped within these encroaching walls, or will her past take any chance of hope away? This was a clever way to start the novel because it begins with an instant mystery... just what has happened to Abigail? The Dreaming • House of Whispers • Lucifer • Books of Magic • John Constantine: Hellblazer • The Dreaming: Waking Hours • Hell & Gone • Nightmare CountryMy stomach churns along with the waters below. One of the few consolations I had cherished before this night was that I should behold the ocean at last. I had imagined it blue, serene. What seethes beneath me is dark, frighteningly powerful; a cauldron of demons”. I will admit, I wasn't expecting the twist that came our way but I also feel it was very thrust upon us, there were no hints leading up to it for us to piece together, we were just thrown in at the deep end. There were also a number of typos. Not necessarily enough to ruin it - as a proofreader by trade I tend to notice these things - but there were enough for me to stop and take notice. Which is concerning seeing as this is a published book, rather than one still going through the edits. But like I say, I imagine most people won't even notice them.
