The main reason to squeeze into a pair of 3-inch shorts is the minimal, barely-there race feel that makes you feel like running fast, unencumbered. They’re lightweight, offer loads of ventilation and breathability, plus maximum freedom to move. They can also help reduce chafe risk and they generally come with built-in liner briefs to preserve your dignity and prevent any accidental exposures. If trail running is your thing, you will normally want a longer pair of men's sports shorts which include a compression layer. The extra length can protect you from the elements, being scratched by bushes and other objects which might get in your way.

Shorts are pretty simple. Aside from the materials, there are a few other variables to consider, though. The 73% nylon and 27% spandex shell is remarkably light and airy with excellent mobility. Not once was the stretchy fabric confining. The shorts pretty much felt unnoticeable, and the brief-style liner was comfortable, offering a good amount of support without feeling restrictive. Offered in a five-inch inseam only, we found the shorts offered outstanding mobility with no restriction. If you’re looking for a snug-fitting integrated brief, the liner offers the best support of any shorts we tested. Our fussy tester, who normally wears a separate brief for added support, found he could comfortably skip the added brief. Still, if you’re a die-hard for the comfort of cotton, try a 50-50 blend that pairs it with a second, more sweat-friendly material, like polyester. You’ll still get some of that cottony softness but with added durability and even UV ray protection. How We Selected

Running shorts explainer

Inseams: Longer inseams (generally, 7 to 9 inches for men and 4 to 8 inches for women) provide more coverage, which can be beneficial if you’re hitting the trails, want sun protection, or just prefer a modest cut. Shorter inseams (around 3 inches and sometimes even shorter for women) and spandex are great for speed workouts, race day, and runs when you want to feel fast and flash a little thigh. As mentioned above, compression shorts can be incorporated into traditional shorts to act as a replacement for the inner lining. These are known as 2-in-1 shorts. Compression can contribute to better blood flow, muscle activation, and general comfort. Higher percentages of these flexible fabrics do have a downside — they tend to absorb and retain more moisture. Moisture-ridden fabric and poor fit are the top causes of chafing. It can be hard to sort through what’s really important when finding a pair of running shorts. To help, here are the key things you need to know about running shorts. Material Here are some examples of various shorts at differing lengths and for different disciplines to help you find the right style for you. Of course, the shorts below are categorised only to illustrate their likely use, so choose whatever type of short makes you most comfortable no matter your preferred terrain or running style.

Most running shorts have two layers: an outer shell and an inner liner. The inner liner’s primary focus is built-in support and is either a mesh brief or spandex-type compression tight, called a 2-in-1. Interior Liners: Keep in mind that many running shorts include underwear. Built-in briefs or compression liners can help simplify your workout wardrobe, while making your runs much more comfortable (and chafe-free). In addition, some shorts include extra support features, like Saxx’s BallPark Pouch featured in its Hightail running shorts, which keeps sensitive body parts from jostling around and rubbing against your thighs as you run. We won’t stop you from running in your favorite all-cotton bottoms, but be wary that the fabric gets heavy when wet, dries slow, and can cause chafing. Plus, 100-percent cotton shorts will most likely do some serious shrinking in your dryer. Some better options are technical fabrics that blend various materials—like polyester, elastane, spandex, and nylon. While the 100% polyester shell isn’t stretchy, they offer superb freedom of movement thanks to a generous side split. Offered in six sizes, from extra small to extra extra large, we found they fit on the larger side compared to other split shorts we tested. Our tester regularly wears a men’s small and would want an extra small.

We tested running shorts in a variety of environments; (photo/Eszter Horanyi) Why You Should Trust Us Lightweight and breathable the Race Shorts from On Running feature a supportive inner brief, elasticated waistband and zoned perforation to keep you cool, dry and comfortable. Crafted with side slits for a full range of movement on race day. The construction of the textile is also important. For hot-weather running, look for a mesh or open weave synthetic fabric, which will feel more breathable on your body (though it will offer less protection from wind and chilly temps). In addition, many high-end performance garments come with antimicrobial treatments to ward off smells. It’s a nice feature to have, especially if you don’t want to wash your shorts after every run. Features to Look For One of the most important considerations with any performance running apparel is the material it’s made from, and shorts are no exception. Sure, you can log miles in your favorite cotton loungewear, but it definitely won’t be a comfortable experience. In general, it’s best to avoid cotton, which is heavy, soaks up moisture, and can cause chafing. While the various lengths provide a basic idea of the type of shorts you need for your running discipline, there are a number of other features to look out for. There can be, however, some confusion about the purpose of these features, so here’s a look at some of the frequent questions asked…

While we prefer a brief style liner, the boxer brief was comfortable and features silicone grip dots to prevent it from riding up. The Trail Talus Light is a shorter inseam version with a brief liner. Seeking out the perfect pair of performance shorts that'll keep you dry, comfortable and ready for anything? The shorts on this list are the ones we kept reaching for time and time again.Offered in both a three and five-inch inseam, our tester found them to run on the shorter side of five-inch running shorts. Still, thanks to a mild amount of stretch, they never felt constricting. The brief liner offers a decent amount of support and hold for such a lightweight pair of shorts. Many of our shorts for men’s sports are made from recycled materials, which means your running kit is also good for the planet. Men’s running shorts and more We’re pleased to report that Patagonia has once again updated its flagship running shorts, and we can confidently say that this is their best version yet. Patagonia replaced the tough, non-stretchy DWR coated 100% recycled polyester with 90% recycled polyester blended with 10% four-way stretch spandex. That little bit of spandex and dropping the DWR made all the difference. The new shell is soft and offers excellent mobility. These shorts are night and day compared to the previous version.
