About this deal

In this new extension, floor screed has been applied over wet underfloor heating pipes. (Image credit: getty images) Preparing the Floor Screed for the Floor Covering In this case study, we look at the process of laying liquid screed in a home renovation project, and hopefully by the end you’ll have a better idea of what to expect! Most suppliers will not allow DIY laying; they will insist that you use an experienced contractor to measure and pour the screed Different manufacturers and suppliers will have different proprietary products so there will be some variation and they will be able to provide specific details. While there is this range in practical terms you have the following choice:

If time is short the process can be speeded up using ‘force drying’ techniques, shrinking drying times to less than 40 days. Possible to create a flat surface which is not level; this can be necessary particularly in wet-rooms for example Clip central heating pipes so that they cannot float up when the screed is poured – Image courtesy of Easyflow Traditionally a screed would have been laid by shovelling in the screed mix and then levelling it with a screeding bar and/or polyurethane float. We explain the best technique for laying screed yourself in our project here. However, there are some new ‘low laitance’ varieties that only require a stiff brush or light sanding with 60 grit sandpaper. Problems can develop if the laitance is left for too long, as it becomes harder to remove and can also hinder the drying process. This isn’t such an issue if you plan to lay unbonded flooring without adhesive, such engineered timber boards. But before tiling it’s essential that floors are free of loose particles and primed to seal porous surfaces and prevent suction of moisture. Our high-quality, lightweight spazzles and Texas concrete placers make it easier for groundworkers to place and grade large volumes of concrete and a variety of loose materials. Ideal for levelling and manoeuvring self-compacting concrete, tarmac, asphalt etc, such as Agilia, Topflow, Breedonflow Form, Cemflow, Highflow, and many more. Expansion and Control Joints With sand/cement, specifying a modified admixture can speed things up so floor coverings can be down in about three weeks. Costs are also reduced because itcan be applied at depths as thin as 35mm. With underfloor heating you typically need 30mm cover above UFH pipes, making about 45mm in total, still incredibly slim by conventional standards. Dries at a rate of 1mm per day up to a screed depth of 40mm and if necessary it can be force dried as early as 7 days after application.

When you have finished you will have a shallow, water-tight polyethylene “pool” where the screed will collect. Step 4: Waterproof Shuttering Liquid screed goes under a number of other names, such as flowing screed, calcium sulphate screed, or anhydrate screed. It has a multitude of beneficial features. Please be aware that these are not the technical notes for cementitious flowing screeds. A few features are listed here:

Problems

We supply robust stainless-steel flow cones & flow plates for slump testing. This equipment is used by screeders to determine the flowability/slump of free-flowing, self-levelling liquid screeds such as Gyvlon, Breedonflow Screed, Isocrete, Supaflo and many more. Spazzles and Concrete Placers Set a laser level to the datum tripod disc and then transfer this level to all of the other tripod discs in turn, adjusting the height carefully until they are all set to your datum level.
