One thing I did find during testing was that, although easy to navigate, Fire TV felt clunky at times. There were often frequent pauses and stutters when accessing apps, changing settings and browsing through menus, which hindered the experience a little, although thankfully these stutters weren’t common. JVC may not carry price tags similar to LG or Sony, but the picture quality of their TVs is quite good. The JVC fared a little better than expected in our testing. In SDR mode, its default Standard picture preset puts out a maximum brightness of around 369cd/m² and achieves a very respectable contrast ratio of 5,329:1 even with all the contrast– and colour-enhancing features turned off. Fire up HDR mode, and peak brightness increases to 400cd/m² while contrast remains high at 5,358:1. There's plenty to keep the whole family happy with Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Discovery, BBC iPlayer, and many more. You’re better off using the automatic resolution than forcing a setting that your Internet connection cannot handle.

So, should you be wary of these bargain TVs? Is one store brand better than other? Or do you need to spend a bit more on a more recognisable brand to get the best experience? At first, I tested this feature on a 1080p Blu-ray of The Martian, before moving on to a 480p and then an HD version of Arrested Development. Colours looked rather drab, which made the image less lifelike, although the upscaling overall was smoother and less noisy than that I experienced with the Hisense 50A7100FTUK. Sound quality If your smartphone cannot stream, the problem is likely with the streaming platform (you can verify by trying another streaming app) or your Internet connection.

The 4K display supports Dolby Vision and HLG HDR formats, and the speakers take advantage of both DTS HD and DTS Virtual X audio. But, how does it perform? Even if your TV is certified for 4k streaming, if you don’t meet the minimum speed, you won’t stream in 4k. You shouldn’t be discouraged by these issues, as you’re likely to encounter them with other brands. It’s a shame, then, that Dolby Vision content in the Disney+ app suffered from some horrible juddering during our testing.
