About this deal

It's pushing the boundaries of how horny you can make something, for the pleasure of an adult audience, and still shelving the book as YA.

It's actually kinda crazy how many extreme acts of violence there are in this book, how many times the characters have sustained terrible injuries and are coated in blood and describing the pain, but with no lasting effects and as the reader you have no doubt on if they will survive or not. Worse, her fellow rulers haven't ceded victory quietly, and there are others in Isla's midst who don't believe her ascent to power was earned. intricate world expands after the riveting culmination of the Centennial games, delving more deeply into Isla? Yeah, we get some numbers, and some explanations to what happened to certain realms during the curses, but not in a way that feels realistic or weighty. It is true that the Lightlark series is attempting to occupy the same romantasy feel as ACOTAR, but the similarities do not stop there.

I know that sometimes just having ideas only serves the romance works fine in books, but I really kept expecting to have at least something meaningful come out of the book, and for how often those ideas were introduced, I thought that'd be it. the copy i read said it was 600 pages long, so that’s the metric i’m going to describe it by (it also felt 600 pages long), even though goodreads says it’s only 300 and something. hey babe, so i’m in love with you and all and you’re like super hot, but no so i actually don’t want to touch you. Aster has a dedicated audience of more than 905,500 followers on TikTok with 100 million views, and 60K followers on Instagram. Yes, let's choose the person who schemed behind her back several times, lied, repeatedly erased her memories, and ignored her for weeks at a time?

The probably isn't the fact that it's horny, but its horniness skates along in this weird limbo gray area because of its genre, offputting and unsatisfying. i don’t particularly like isla and i don’t like either of the “love interests,” oro or grim, but she should not have been with oro. It's meant to be a little silly, but I really don't get the point in bringing it up or saying it aloud when the book doesn't attempt to interface with the actual politics of war or democracy or monarchies in any meaningful way. i’m literally going to tell you the plot, so if you care, run run run as fast as you can and get out of here! Oro girlies we're winning battles, even though we will inevitably lose the war (a sequel has not been announced but it's probably going to get a sequel).

The one star is reserved for the astronomical level of smut and it being too much alike SJM’S acotar series and writing. seductive haunts instead of embracing her duties as the newly crowned leader of two separate realms. No wonder there are rebellions and shit because if I had to live my entire life under a shitty curse because some ruler got cheated on and turned into the joker and then a different ruler got weird and petty and started a war, then I'd make a rebellion too, tf?i need to be really stoic and vaguely reference to chivalry for a bit, so you can just get fucked, i guess. At one point, the idea of democracy is mocked because a vote gives the main characters a disadvantage when it comes to the approaching war.
