About this deal

The book Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling by Tony Merry has inspired and guided thousands of counselling students since it was first published in 1999. Clearly, I believe in Carl Rogers' theories, otherwise I wouldn't have spent the past four years training in his style of counselling, but he was ultimately a scientist and some of his theory does get a tad complicated for my non-scientific brain.

Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you.

As a facilitator of person-centred learning groups for many years, I’ve experienced how Tony’s writing evokes passionate engagement, dialogue and encounter among participants. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It is heavily referenced, beautifully so, and so leads you to many more sources to use for assignments (if that is your purpose, which I suspect at this level of publication it would be).

Tony was Reader in Psychology at the University of East London and taught on postgraduate and undergraduate courses in counselling and counselling psychology. Tony Merry's second edition of Learning and Being in Person-Centered Counselling stands out as impressively comprehensive, accessible and skilfully condensed. She is a former Convenor for the British Association for the Person-Centred Approach (BAPCA) and a former board member of the World Association for Person-Centered and Experiential Psychotherapies (WAPECP). I particularly enjoyed the theory sections in [Learning and Being] - and I valued the inclusion of cultural, political, professional and social issues at an early stage . Many cutting edge topics are included such as discussions about human nature, multi-cultural awareness and time-limited practice.British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (2018) Ethical framework for the counselling professions.

In 2020 the third edition was updated by Sheila including a new chapter on recent developments in Person-Centred counselling. I anticipate that trainees will especially welcome the additions to the Merry book about placements (chapter six, 'Training Issues: Client work and personal development') and Supervision (chapter seven). Students who want to understand how to practise person-centred counselling will find useful suggestions and insight into how to accompany a client on their individual journey. Excellant book for anyone, at any level of understanding, to develop a sound understanding of person centred history, theory and practice.

Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling is a classic textbook that provides essential reading for all person-centred counselling students and experienced practitioners alike. This is a rigorous, faithful and trustworthy book for those wanting to learn more about a person-centred way of being. I also valued the inclusion of the nineteen propositions in the Merry book, and the translations into more approachable language will, I think, be welcomed by trainees . It brings theory to life with its suggestions for exploring and developing person-centred values, qualities, attitudes and skills. It might also de-mystify what Counselling is about and therefore help you to make the most of counselling sessions.

Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling has inspired and guided thousands of counselling students since it was first published in 1999. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Despite being first published more than 20 years ago, this book remains relevant to contemporary person-centred counselling practice. This process-focused reflexivity, so essential in person-centred practice, makes this newly revised version invaluable and important for readers of all backgrounds.

Learning and Being in Person-Centred Counselling is an important book for any student of counselling and psychotherapy. It offers in-depth discussion of all aspects of person-centred counselling from its origins to current developments in theory and practice.
