About this deal

I tried to take your hand, look straight at you, but like an optical black spot you slid silently sideways, just out of reach. Years go by, and after becoming a HUGE star and FINALLY getting clean, Johnny wants to be back in Kennedy's life and meet the daughter he's never even seen. Kirkus Reviews "A perfectly paced domestic drama centered on two lovely, lonesome people, Ghosted is a brilliant debut novel that explores the power of fate. You know when you see a book on your feed and find yourself wondering if it's really worth all of the hype?

Anglophiles, take note: this month is all about historical fiction, several of which take place in Merry Old England. Seven words to describe Kennedy Reagan Garfield: Focused, heard-headed, nurturing, broken, lonely, responsible and strong. The result was that there was an omnipresent sense of turmoil, leading to one hell of an emotional rollercoaster ride for the entirety of the book. Often, I’d stay awake long after my little sister and her friend had slackened into sleep, wondering what kind of protection I’d actually be able to offer were someone to burst in.Every day when she goes to work, lurid tabloids surround her, the face of a notorious bad boy haunting her from their covers. Seven words to describe Jonathan Elliot Cunningham aka Johnny Cunning: Charismatic, remorseful, determined, flawed, lonely, reflective and trusting. She’s kissing me, and I’m so fucking stunned that it takes me a moment to react, a moment to consider kissing her back. It was speckled with hard Frisbees of cowpat and was so high up you could almost look down our chimney.

Since her 2009 debut A Kind of Intimacy, Jenn Ashworth has been quietly collecting honours for her distinctive, empathetic and sharply observed novels, of which Ghosted is another . This will appeal to those who enjoy “slice of life” style, diving deep into a character’s emotions and thoughts. Finally a love story that is not all about unrealistic drama, people not communicating and creating unnecessary misunderstandings. When Kennedy Garfield met Jonathan Cunningham back in high school, she knew he had all the makings of a tragic hero. That’s where I think Rosie Walsh has got the balance right with this book – the humour and the fact that Sarah is normally a high flyer stop this story from going into weird territory. We had ended up bending each other’s bodies and personalities into a shape that would fit nobody else’s.

Deliciously addictive, surprising and sentimental, Ghosted is a must-read for fans of Liane Moriarty and Jojo Moyes. What I mean by that is that in the beginning of the book when the present-day relationship between Kennedy and Jonathan is most damaged, the contrasting story of their sweet, untainted beginning is told. One day becomes two, then three, then four… and, before they know it, seven perfect days have passed. Around their high school graduation, they left their small town together and headed away to follow their dreams. She is sleepwalking through her job, drinking heavily at night, binge-watching TV – much the same, it transpires, as when Mark was still there.
