About this deal

Eric Ravilious (1903-42) was a painter, designer, illustrator and wood engraver and remains one of the best-known English artists of the 1930s.

In this context the Mainstone Press is pleased to announce the publication of The Story of High Street. He quickly mastered the technical skills to achieve a wider range of colours in his lithographs than the four ink colours used, by overprinting transparent inks. And Ravilious seems to have gone out of his way to find some extraordinary examples that celebrated their individuality through the most amazing window displays. Only 2,000 copies of the original book were printed before the lithographic plates were destroyed in the London Blitz. These cookies help provide information on metrics the number of visitors, bounce rate, traffic source, etc. He made detailed annotated sketches on the spot, from which he later drew edited versions with simple, incisive pencil lines, and eventually transferred them to lithographic plates. Here at last, after all this long time, is “High Street” and I send you a copy as a sort of Christmas present . Ravilious’s lithographs are magnificent, but the book itself was poorly designed, its pinched margins cramping both text and lithographs. First published in 1938, this classic book introduces the British high street, pairing the timeless illustrations of Eric Ravilious with an engaging text by architectural historian J.

His works captures an England changing from the certainties of the early 20th century through to the upheavals and modernisation of the country as the Second World War broke out. Always mannerly-but-never-stodgy, Ravilous' characters are stalwart, earnest and maybe-a-bit Python-esque. This book has been out of print for many years but we still have the odd studio copy available - usually well loved, with the odd cover scratch, dent and bump.
