When I first latched onto the idea of becoming a real estate developer, one of my mentors told me that there were two paths I could take that would ultimately get me where I wanted to be. While striking an appropriate, cost-effective balance between energy conservation and generating renewable energy is the goal, minimizing energy use is a necessary first step, irrespective of the fact that the energy may come from renewable resources. Building Construction Illustrated is a practical introduction to the basic principles of building construction that illustrates how a building goes together, describes its major physical components and presents the material options available to the designer and builder and the factors to be considered in their selection. I've definitely still got a lot to learn, but this book has been a fantastic step in the right direction.For those interested in residential design and construction, I recommend two books that are more useful, and certainly more accessible, than Ching’s book. Whatever aspect of construction you struggle with, you can find hundreds of helpful illustrations and descriptions to get you up to speed. The illustrations and the text documenting the different phases and the different requirements for safe and secure home building is very telling.
