About this deal

Stretches to try and associate my ramblings about Transatlantic with this a discussion about this film aside (I hear director Gábor Csupó is a big Frank Zappa fan, so I'm sure he appreciates the promotion of cheesy progressive rock), at least when "The Chronicles of Narnia" dragged, it eventually ended up to some exciting intensity. I understand that this is for the very young, and it's not like a sense of wonderment and dramatic depth aren't captured relatively well at times, but on the whole, what could have and should have been a more genuine and tastefully done fantasy drama with both depth and style proves to be generally obnoxious and distancing, with overbearing sentimentality that don't so much reflect ambition, as much as they reflect that classic Disney laziness.

Josh Hutcherson was not their first choice for the role of Jesse Aarons, but they settled with him because they "felt the chemistry between AnnaSophia Robb and him". At school, Leslie discovers from Janice that her bullying is due to her abusive father, and the two become friends, with Janice later befriending Jess as well. The filmmakers distanced themselves from the advertising campaign for the film, saying that it was deliberately misleading and made the film seem to be about, or occurring in, a fantasy world.

co-production with Walden Media, received an A− from audiences, according to exit pollster CinemaScore. Although there is a generation that is very familiar with the book, if you are over 40, then you probably haven't, and we need to reach them. Soon one of the friends must draw on the strength of their imaginary kingdom to cope with a tragedy. We needed someone who could go from an introverted boy in an isolated world to someone who completely taps into his imagination and becomes a confident, brave leader in Terabithia. Delightful visuals, combined with a cloyingly overblown, but nonetheless lively score by Aaron Zigman sustain a moderate degree of entertainment value, while capturing a sense of wonderment, though not quite with as much genuineness as the convincing performances.

I shall not spoil the story for those who have yet to see the movie, but I will say that, in my opinion, this movie is for a more mature audience than one would think. Robb's character Leslie claims it's "a place just for them, where there are no Janice Avery's or Scott Hoager's (local bullies). The New York Times critic Jeannette Catsoulis believed that the fantasy was kept in the background "to find magic in the everyday", and thought Csupó directed "like someone intimate with the pain of being different, allowing each personality more than a single characteristic".He also said that he took on the role because he wanted to star in a film that his children could watch. The story was based on his real-life best friend, Lisa Hill, who was struck by lightning and killed when they were both eight years old. It received positive reviews from critics, with praise for its visuals, cast performances, and faithfulness to the source material.
