Over the last few months, HUAWEI Mate 20 X (5G) passed the entire suite of tests for 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G communication products required by the GCF, proving its advanced functionality and performance. The HUAWEI Mate 20 X (5G) smartphone has excellent 5G connectivity, through the use of a dual chipset configuration with Huawei's latest generation 5G multimode terminal chips, the 7 nm Balong 5000 and Kirin 980, which support both the SA (Standalone) and NSA (Non-Standalone) 5G networks for the world's first 5G dual-mode smartphone. Sure Apple makes my life easier, as I seamlessly pick up where I left off with whatever Apple device is at close hand, but the lack of 5G in the Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max triggered me into trying something new.It has been improved with the addition of General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) and later via the Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) technology. It costs less, looks virtually identical and, despite the lack of 5G, offers more battery and a headphone jack – likely more useful features than 5G until its rollout is complete. Originally intended for Chinese markets, the Mate 20 X has made its way to the Middle East and the UK. Reviewers’ Note: As a fan of big phones, the Mate 20 X represents the right amount of “big” to me where I had hoped Samsung’s Galaxy Note series would head towards. We’ve seen it before on the likes of the Mate 20 Pro and the P30 Pro, and of course the original Mate 20 X – and there’s nothing new to report here.

The SoC integrates different hardware components such as the CPU, GPU, memory, peripherals, interfaces, etc. The Operating System allows the user to install and run third party applications (apps), apps are used to add new functionality to the device. Huawei’s custom interface that sits on top of Android 9, which is the latest widely available release of Google’s mobile OS. Colors on the display are almost too dramatic out of the box but they can be adjusted in the extensive Display settings that allow you to switch between Vivid and Natural color modes as well as modify color temperatures or enable the eye comfort mode that reduces harsh blue light emitted from the phone. As I’ve already mentioned above, the rest of the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G’s performance is pretty much identical to the non-5G model.

In terms of device support going forward, Huawei has guaranteed that the Mate 20 X 5G along with all its phones currently on the market at the time of writing (other than the Huawei Mate 30 range) will continue to have access to Google Play services.

Regardless, if our experience is anything to go by, early adopters of 5G aren’t going to get anywhere near these sorts of speeds. The 5G version of the Huawei Mate 20 X is largely identical to the phone that was first announced in autumn 2018. The higher the pixel density, the more detailed and clearer is the information displayed on the screen. At the moment 5G has a niche appeal, so what better phone to add 5G to than the phone with the most niche appeal of all – the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G?Composed of leading mobile network operators, mobile device manufacturers, chipset suppliers, testing organizations and test equipment suppliers, it has the most comprehensive and stringent mobile device certification system in the industry. The omission of a headphone jack by comparison to the original is a strange thing, though the phone does ship with an adapter in the box so you can use wired cans in a pinch.

Thanks to updates since launch, the Mate 20-series still delivers a great setup with a healthy amount of versatility, and stellar image quality for a phone.There are understated speaker grilles on the bottom and top which will likely get muffled when you hold the phone in landscape orientation but thankfully the phone also includes a headphone jack. Due to limitations in CPU processing power, memory used by the operating system and pre-installed applications, the actual space available to users may be less than the stated memory capacity.
