I’ve heard scattered reports that wear and tear on sticks is happening faster than you’d expect, but I haven’t noticed any problems myself yet. I’ve spent the last month or so playing around with the Astro C40, and while it’s not a perfect device, it’s clear Astro’s trademark attention to detail could benefit all sorts of premium peripherals. Once the front plate is removed, all of the components are swapped around in just a few seconds, snapping into magnetic slots. The PV rating (Peak To Valley) is a measurement from the highest point (Peak) to the lowest point (Valley). Great battery life, reliable connectivity, durable build quality, trigger stops, grip buttons…the C40 does it all.It's covered almost entirely in a rubberized matte black material, with a textured black plastic panel on the face to hold the analog sticks, direction pad, and face buttons. The sticks are displayed with large gray circles that indicate the full range of movement as an orange line with a dot on the end. My only minor quibble is that the left front button inputs switches aren’t quite as tactile and responsive as the ones seen on the Razer Raiju Ultimate. Amazingly, the day it turned up was clear, so I used it the day I got it - I am surrounded by lakes and I'm on grass, my dew shield was helping, but after 3-4 hours it was reaching the corrector which meant the end of my night, last night I had this on at 50% (had no idea what setting to put it on! The Astro C40 TR is the company's first non-audio gaming accessory, a gamepad designed for use with the PlayStation 4 and PC. The locking pins to shorten the throw on the triggers has a negative impact here, as the game recognizes how far down the triggers are pressed to apply gas or brake, only applies half-pressure. I’ve always preferred the former, and playing PS4 games with my hands in a more comfortable position is a real boon.

Though they’re still a cut above the slightly spongy inputs you’ll get on regular Dualshocks, so this is hardly a deal-breaker. I’ve reviewed more than a thousand different consumer electronics products including headphones, speakers, TVs, and every major game system and VR headset of the last decade. The Razer Raiju’s magnetic customisation system – which lets you change which caps you use just by pulling the old ones off and slotting the new ones in – is great for speed and convenience. While this isn’t anything to usually note, there’s a deep socket for the USB cord to plug in to, that provides protection from bending. It doesn’t use bluetooth, but its wireless dongle is small and invasive to plug in to any free USB port.The C40 TR has fewer back paddles than some of its competition, at just two, but even for hardcore players that should be plenty. Durability: Look for a controller that is well-built and durable, especially if you plan to use it frequently or for extended gaming sessions. I’ve used this and Scuf controllers and the C40 has a better feel to it plus you can adjust the thumb stick and d-pad to different positions and buttons. The passage required to reach the USB port is supposed to be there for protection of the hardware, but Astro may have gone a bit overboard.

The included USB cable has some length to it, and the response time wired is claimed to be tournament ready. In all cases, the controller was immediately recognized and I never had to manually configure it for it to work. I can see them being useful for accessibility purposes, but I haven’t found a practical way of using them yet.On the PS4 the touchpad will default to its normal function, but on the PC it is essentially worthless.
