About this deal

I wish I was as confident as Sachi since I have a similar ambition and distaste for the self-depressed who make their entitlement everyone else’s problem.

it's interesting to think about punpun's state on mind in this volume considering the turn the series takes. He's his own worst enemy, yes, but the deck's also stacked pretty heavily against him - from his horrible childhood to the fact that his uncle married his rapist (who can't take a hint and leave him alone) to both his and society's inability to understand his mental illness, Punpun is a quietly ticking time bomb. Although this volume can’t help but feel like the preamble of something truly sinister about to come, nonetheless I enjoyed the ephemeral feel of this particular section of the story: the delicateness with which it is told, moments so fragile they can break at any second, and yet, even if darkness looms ahead, there’s a genuine beauty and tenderness here that the author never loses track of.In 2001, his short story “Uchu kara Konnichiwa” (Hello from Outer Space) won the first Sunday GX Rookie Prize. Punpun's class cleans up for the end of semester while Punpun dreads breaking his promise to Aiko, who will kill him. Nobody in this manga can commit to anything and they don't try in the slightest, but then they're all so desperate.

The boys wonder where Punpun has gone off to, and Seki remarks that he seems back to his normal self. Witness the titular Punpun - who is depicted as a tiny, caricatured bird in an otherwise normal human setting - as he copes with his dysfunctional family and friends, his love interest, his oncoming adolescence and his hyperactive mind. And you’re proud of Punpun’s dad for being great in one facet (the only one) and find out it’s not even true! While it's true that Punpun's life is, and probably always will be, a complete mess, it felt like he turned a corner in this volume and that made me happy.Honestly, I felt so bad for the girlfriend, she wasted so many years of her life with stupid ass Yuichi who only likes underage kids.

I'd be fine with her being his ultimate final partner in life, but I don't think that's in the cards (too many volumes left). Punpun skips choir practice to go home, where his uncle, mother, and lawyer are seated at the table and inform him his surname is no longer Punyama but Onodera. And when he gets tired of them and kills himself, you'll have to start all over again and find a new boyfriend. Yuuichi talks about how a young Mama had traveled a lot and abandoned her old life, but rather than being free, she was just running away.

I did like this more than the first volume and the ending left me intrigued enough to want to read on, but this is seriously so messed and discomfiting - even just the way the (human characters) are drawn is skeevy and makes me uneasy (the homeroom teacher in particular creeps me out).
