About this deal

With prose that reads more like a chat between friends and recipes that mix comfort with innovation, her first book is guaranteed to delight. This is the story of a little cookie who lives in a bakery and goes to school in a gingerbread house. Her favorite television show is "Rabbit Hutch", a show for young children about a man, Sam, and his pet rabbit, Lily. Beauty's birthday is approaching and she is dreading it, however Gerry appears to turn over a new leaf and act like an ideal father. This was a difficult book for me to read because it hit home in many ways for me and I felt it was very accurate in describing Beauty's feelings.

I don’t think I ever made anything from it, just enjoyed reading through it and thinking of the possibilities! One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. She has mastered the euphoric balance of crispy meets chewy along with dynamic flavor profiles that keep me turning to her time and time again for cookies that always deliver amazing results! The recipe section includes something for everyone, from classic teatime cookies and breakfast bakes such as Coconut Macaroons, Lemon Squares and Apple and Cinnamon Muffins, to celebration cookies such as Baklava, Brandy Snaps and Gingerbread.

I feel that this is something of a rarity in children's literature and, as such, it was one of my favourite parts of the novel.

Just before summer, Beauty is sent to a new school which she is adamant against at first, until she eventually agrees. She has been nominated for Forbes magazine's 30 Under 30 list, and has received the Art Directors Club Young Guns Award. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award. The book opens with an expert introduction that includes all the information, instruction, hints and guidance needed to make gorgeous cookies at home. But also being happy alongside her when she and her mother start a happier life together, away from Beauty's raging dad. She is frequently berated for breaking any of his house rules, as well as for her lack of looks and confidence, even though she is a wealthy girl who lives in a large, beautifully decorated house and attends a private school. Even though Dilly is living with Mike and he hints that he wants to start dating, Dilly refuses for the time being, as she wants to be independent. This book got me into reading I absolutely LOVED it I always had it with me in fear of never reading a better book I've always felt that the ending needed a bit more closure that's why its not 5 stars.
