About this deal

Calvo Serraller, Francisco, Goya. Obra pictórica, Ramdon House Mondadori, Barcelona, 2009, pp. 284. In the artwork, Goya sat two gruesome-looking figures at a table, eating. The subject on the right appears to have a skull for a head, which has led many viewers to associate the scene with death. Despite his current state of decomposition, the skeleton figure is still “eating like crazy, trying to get all he can.” Some scholars believe that the imagery translates as a kind of joke about greed or glutton.

Goya's Saturn Devouring One of His Sons". smARThistory at Khan Academy. Archived from the original on October 24, 2014 . Retrieved September 10, 2023. There is a roughened texture in the Saturn Devouring His Son painting, which also creates emphasis on the subject matter. The tactile qualities of the paint are apparent through the brushstrokes, which appear hastily and almost wildly applied, echoing the wild nature of the event taking place. Carderera, V., Goya, en: http://hemerotecadigital.bne.es/details.vm?lang=es&q=id:0003096384, Semanario Pintoresco, 120, 1838, pp. 632.Gudiol, José, Goya, 1746-1828: Biografía, estudio analítico y catálogo de sus pinturas, i, Polígrafa, Barcelona, 1970, pp. 71; 268, n. 221. Before we discuss the painting in more depth, it will be useful to know more about who Saturn was, and to answer the inevitable question of why did Saturn devour his son in the first place? He was the Roman god attributed to the harvest and agriculture.

En: Goya and the spirit of enlightenment, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1989, pp. 22-23, n. 10. Goya’s Saturn Devouring His Son (or Saturn Devouring One of His Sons) depicts the Roman god Saturn cannibalizing his son. Saturn, the god of agriculture, time, and other traits, was originally the Greek Titan Cronos. As the myth goes, Cronus feared a prophecy that he would be overthrown by his own son. So he swallowed each of his children as they were born. His wife, Rhea, managed to save the youngest, Zeus, by hiding him away on the island of Crete and fed Kronos a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes. Use of vivid colors: Goya was known for his use of bright, bold colors, particularly in his early works. Later in his career, he shifted towards a more muted palette, but his use of color always remained expressive and impactful. Földényi, F.
