About this deal

There’s a certain character to Terra all its own and Chris does well to explore that wherever possible. How each character tackles these mysteries is a plot all of its own, given that they each take them on from different angles, eventually coming to an unsettling truth by the end. The victims of the Holocaust were powering Saul forward, literally as he took step after step toward Willi, until he was able to choke Willi to death.

Roger Harrison was sobbing as Charles breathed his final, shuddering gasps on that field of innocence. The blond young man showed his white smile and the Negro bobbed his head in what I took as a farewell. Modern pseudo-sciences have studied it and renamed it, removed most of its power, confused its uses and origins, but it remains the shadow of what Mesmer discovered. Such are the moral questions Saul raises throughout the novel, often to the consternation of Natalie who doesn’t have time or patience for it.Later, Saul is compelled to break into the house where the murders started to investigate, and meets Natalie; who has come for the same reason; to find out why her father, a photographer used and murdered in the battle, has died so bizarrely.

From this angle, he couldn’t see many of them striking it, but the few he did see held nothing back as they hammered into the shutter. But if any of this sounds like your wheelhouse, and it is mine because like Simmons, I’m also deeply fascinated by human violence (intimate and grandiose), with a specific interest in 20th century violence as well, then I highly recommend Carrion Comfort. Perhaps it was the dark forests of his homeland that he thought of as he stalked his human quarry through the sterile streets of Los Angeles. Again, especially now without the help of a third person in Gentry, I was left wondering how they heck are they going to take these things on? The mottles of age were more visible at night and his neck, where it disappeared into his turtleneck, was all ropes and tendons.

A sheet of black filled his vision as hundreds of birds dived at the cottage, pointed beaks thrust forward. Saul Laski, and his tormentor, an officer of the SS he refers to as Oberst (Supreme or Colonel), Willi Borden, who in 1980 America, is a sleazy Hollywood producer. In other words, I’m saying this is the longest it has taken me to read a book — just shy of two weeks — since earlier this year when it took me 12 days to read Neal Stephenson’s newest book, Termination Shock at 708 pages. Gentry and Natalie get to the house and almost to Melanie, but Vincent attacks, killing Gentry, as Natalie kills Vincent. The NBC executive had murdered the five members of his family and drowned a visiting soap opera actress in his pool. Romantic in the worst sense of the word; dedicated to saccharine or insipid ideals that only an adolescent—or an adolescent society—would strive to maintain.
