About this deal

Indeed, again like the Back to the Futures, it's almost handy to have as a point of comparison, because it leaves the rest of the movie looking all the more stunning, enjoying some tremendous native 4K shots which look nigh on perfect, lapping up pin-sharp detail on faces, skin texture, hair, clothing and backgrounds. is the gold standard for unlikely partnership, buddy-buddy action comedy thrillers, setting the bar for countless entries in the genre, several of which would also feature star Eddie Murphy, although he's rarely been better than here in his fresh young debut. Though I get the sense some of the rough edges have been cleaned up for this restoration (the large wall screen in Quaid’s apartment doesn’t look as fake here as it has previously), you can still make out some of the seams and detect when things just look “off. Bell shot most of his material as George, pre-Kuato reveal, first, but said when it came time to film the Kuato material, “I just was so nervous and I didn’t get any sleep. It's not perfect, the reds are desperate to bleed out, but it's easily the best the feature has ever looked, leaving you wowed on several occasions - if not throughout - and with only a few scant moments across the entire runtime which remind you that they're still playing with 30 year old material that has some limitations.

I enjoyed it, but it’s nowhere near as in-depth (or critical) as another similar documentary, Electric Boogaloo, which wasn’t afraid to hold back in its tale of Cannon Films in all of its crazy glory. Volume levels are mixed nicely so that things get loud without drowning out anything important and bass is effective without overdoing it.

What was genius - in a way comparable to the themes of Blade Runner - was the ongoing idea that the whole story might have been the actual virtual adventure, being played out, blending ideas of dreams and reality in the same way that Blade Runner questioned whether its protagonist was human or android. All of these things ultimately “are what they are” and it’s doubtful much could be done about it without completely redoing them digitally, which I’m hoping would never be done. Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of “Today, we could do that really easily with computers” kind of comments.

So after seeing an advertisement for Rekall Industries, which specializes in implanting fake vacations into people’s minds, Quaid decides to go to Mars virtually instead. I wrote several years ago about how Schwarzenegger’s The Last Action Hero was the prototype for the modern superhero film Deadpool, with its manic, meta-humor approach that loves to wink at the audience and let them in on the gag. In short, this is a dynamic, exciting sound presentation that does everything as well as can be expected. The film’s other colours also look wonderful, and it’s incredible the various shades you get here, but the film does lean yellow- er (or green- er in darker scenes) than previous editions. Even more significant is the film erupting on screens right at the cusp of the CGI furor, completely revolutionizing the filmmaking industry forever. It has an unbelievable film-like texture and every fine detail present onscreen, from clothing fabric to the pebbles on the Mars surface, really pop. state dystopia intermixes high technology amidst slum-like structures that produces the look of Blade Runner, a world populated by something resembling Star Wars' clone troopers. For this Ultra HD release, the original camera negative was scanned in native 4K and the image was graded for high dynamic range (both Dolby Vision and HDR10 options are available) in a process supervised and approved by Verhoeven.

My favorite aspect still remains never knowing if it actually happened or if it's all part of Quaid's vacation fantasy. The story's always been beautifully complex, and it's not really dumbed down in Director Len Wiseman's ( Underworld) take. Cohaagen awaits them in the reactor control room, claiming that activating it will destroy the planet. As Quaid (and the audience) learns, Kuato is one of Mars’ mutants, a psychic who is conjoined to his brother, George, appearing as a small, mishappen creature growing out of George’s stomach. it's actually a bit lower, toward the midrange where some of Jerry Goldsmith's score in particular just doesn't seem to have adequate punch. Open Your Mind features film journalists and authors Daniel Sweiger, Jeff Bond, Lukas Kendall, and Robert Townson, who discuss the score in relation to other sci-fi scores of the era.
