About this deal

The glossy plastic used on the back of the ear cups and headband ends looks nice but easily collects fingerprints. This works to some extent and also manages to not come across as too sibilant, yet it is not enough to overcome that sensation of things being veiled. However, for genres demanding a higher degree of timbre accuracy and an overall sense of naturalness, I wouldn’t recommend the Athena. But what’s different with the Athena is that the whole “repositioning” thing is done convincingly and actually helps me pick up details better in the wider spectrum, and the overall harmonic level in the reproduction is even higher. Pertanto compratevi pure le vostre cuffie "blasonate" sentiteci e scoprite in esse ciò che i comuni mortali faticano a discernere.

This creates an imbalance in tones within this range, accentuating sibilance and the more metallic aspects of the timbre of instruments. The overall bass tone skews toward a warmer, heavier note presentation, with a bit of romanticization added.

They feature a closed-back design which means when you put these on, it shuts out the rest of the world. In the case of the Athena, I find that the EQ is not needed to tailor it to preference but rather to fix the issues that are present. If you're in the market for a new set of headphones, the HarmonicDyne Athena headphones are definitely worth considering. Moving into the midbass, this sensation is less present (although there are still hints) and these regions have a hint of warmth to them without being overly exaggerated. These are the first HarmonicDyne headphones I have tried but I am always looking out for a decent closed back set and if they are budget orientated, even better.

While some might be intrigued by the specific tuning of the Athena – a somewhat mellow, warm, and enveloping sound with a hint of treble spice – I’m not sure they’ll ever discover the Athena since it isn’t marketed as such. The Athena squeezes out micro-nuances that fully engage the listener, despite the mild colorations added. With that said, I also do feel like it is already a bit dampened, and perhaps EQ would help as well.

Nonetheless, it’s interesting to see that V-response can benefit my listening pleasure as long as it is carefully tuned. The foam and suede fabrics provide a soft seal without overheating my ears, even during longer listening sessions.
