About this deal

The delivery in Standard mode is deliberately flat and balanced, and while that works for everyday TV viewing, films demand more dynamism. The Theatre setting offers a bigger sound, but it isn’t one that escapes the confines of the TV. The setting also gives dialogue a slight boxed-in feel. The 65U8QF has a few flaws, and that will affect anyone after a set for more critical viewing. Best to watch on this set during the day than at night. Hisense’s laser TVs have received an update this year, with this being an area the company claims is leading the way forward with its ultimate aim being to create an “impeccable home cinema experience”.The brand uses its Ultra Short Throw Laser in the L5F Laser TV to deliver a highly detailed 4K image. The shape of the stand isn’t conducive to placing a soundbar in front of the unit, unless it’s a compact one. Attaching the stand is easy – simply a case of uniting the three pieces together and screwing the top panel into the TV. There’s a slight give; but the stand isn’t one for swivelling to and fro.

Let’s start with what’s good. The bezel is discreet enough to not intrude on the TV viewing experience, and the depth of the set is just 78mm without the stand, making it appreciatively slim in appearance. We should say right away, though, that the 65U8HQ also potentially undermines some of the Mini LED/local dimming picture quality promise by a) only supporting 160 separate dimming zones and b) using an IPS type of LCD panel. Some rival Mini LED TVs carry 500 local dimming zones and more (though many regular LED TVs carry far fewer dimming zones than 160), while IPS panels tend to struggle more with contrast than the alternative VA panel type. Hisense uses Android TV for the U8G’s interface, like the H8G and H9G before it. It’s slightly clunkier than the Google TV interface used by the Sony A90J and the Chromecast With Google TV, but it’s still just as functional and loaded with features. There are added smarts in Chromecast support and built-in Alexa. Although there’s none of the new advanced gaming features, the 65U8QFTUK marks itself out as an excellent set for gamers with older consoles. I recorded latency at 1080p/60Hz at 14.1ms, and you can feel the smoothness in the inputs for a game, such as Project Cars 3, which requires precise responses. The main HDR formats are repped in HDR10, HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Hisense says the 65U8QFTUK can hit a peak brightness of 1000 nits – and it can certainly go bright. HDR content is given a punchy, gleaming, near three-dimensional presentation at times. Audio is funnelled through 2x 10W speaker system and there’s support for Dolby Atmos. This isn’t the immersive sound of soundbars and surround systems, but an attempt to produce better sound through the TV’s speakers.

The Hisense 65U8HQ looks more like a mid-range TV than a truly premium one. It’s much more robustly built than Hisense’s more affordable sets, but sports both a fairly chubby profile and a rather ‘meh’ grey frame and desktop stand. Promising pointers towards the 65U8HQ’s quality come from its carriage of both the IMAX Enhanced endorsement and a Filmmaker mode. These mean that IMAX and the Ultra HD Forum have both deemed the set worthy of receiving their respective endorsements and modes, with Filmmaker Mode also hopefully offering a shortcut for movie enthusiasts looking for a big screen home cinema TV that can deliver accurate pictures on the cheap. For people with less lofty expectations, this screen will likely be an attractive one, especially if you factor in its multi-HDR support. Its SDR performance is satisfying and its HDR performance can be impressive. I’m interested to see what Hisense does with its 2021 TV range. You should buy the Hisense 65U8QFTUK if…The 65U8HQ even combines its HDR support with a built-in light sensor to deliver the HDR10+ Adaptive and Dolby Vision IQ systems, whereby the TV can adjust the way HDR is presented based on a continual assessment of room light conditions. Assembly of the TV is simple, requiring little more than slotting in the stand and tightening the screws. The stand juts out, and I can imagine would make placement of a soundbar awkward for smaller tables and stands. To wall-mount the set you’ll need a compatible VESA wall-mount.

If you turn its over-eager, softness-inducing noise reduction systems off, meanwhile, the 65U8HQ is capable of delivering a reasonably sharp and detailed 4K image experience. There are certainly sharper looking 4K TVs out there, especially when it comes to upscaled HD sources, but the 65U8HQ’s level of sharpness is certainly a step beyond HD and generally yields quite natural rather than gritty or forced results. There are a slew of various picture setting options from brightness to picture modes. Sports lovers with a keen eye for visuals may find some usage out of the various motion enhancement and clearness modes. It’s definitely noticeable during testing as the biggest sports event in the world, the 2021 Olympics, looked gorgeous. Another great sports example is Netflix’s Naomi Osaka documentary which takes advantage of Dolby Vision and HDR10. Color performance is downright fantastic. The above chart shows color measurements using an SDR signal compared with Rec.709 broadcast standard color values, and using an HDR10 signal compared with DCI-P3 digital cinema color values, both using the Theater Day picture mode. In both cases, the U8G covers the respective color spaces with impressive accuracy out of the box. Only one color deviated significantly from its ideal levels, with magenta leaning quite red with an HDR10 signal, but all primary colors hit their marks nearly perfectly. The Viewing Experience

The performance in the 55-inch model doesn’t scale up as well to the 65-inch unit. Although there’s Dolby Atmos support for a more spacious presentation, for a screen of this size a soundbar is a must if the audio is to match the visuals the Hisense 65U8QFTUK can produce. That has now been followed up with the 2022 flagship U8HQ model. I’m less confident with its HDR10+ performance, however. A HDR10+ stream of 1917 on Prime Video looks close to – but less refined – than its disc-based counterpart. There have been many complaints about modern TVs that utilize Android TV in regards to responsiveness. For the U8G, there wasn’t much sluggishness or non-responsive moments during testing. Apps including Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ and more booted adequately without any issue.
