My favorite time of the year to visit Tulum is the low season which is after Easter until the end of June and September through November. However, mind that September through November is hurricane season so there is more risk of rain. The very talented artist from Cape Town, Daniel Popper, specializes in art installations all over the world and this is by far one of his most creative works! Tulum town is a world away from the beach area. It has more of a local feel to it and it’s here you’ll find a lot more of the budget restaurants, taco stands and cheaper hotels and hostels. It is impossible to know in advance where there will be sargassum, but your best tool will be the Quintana Roo Sargasso Monitoring Network which publishes a daily map with the status of the beaches. Hands down one of the best things to do when you arrive is to head straight to the beach and the most beautiful is Playa Paraiso which translates to Paradise Beach.It is a sustainable and convenient way to explore the city, its surroundings and the beach, but be ready for the sun and the heat, especially in summer! If you’re looking for something more affordable, don’t mind renting a bike to or using taxis to get around, or are looking to explore other areas like the cenotes near Tulum or the Coba Mayan ruins and other Tulum attractions then the town is a great place to stay in Tulum. With a rich culture that attracts many nationalities, it is not surprising that Tulum hosts so many artistic events.

You can also go by bike to the ruins of Tulum and Playa Paraiso, they are only 15 minutes from downtown. All that said, I do think that there is a right way to do Tulum, and that its allure is undeniably cool and worth a visit. There’s not much choice when it comes to good Tulum hotels on the beach, but Punta Piedra Posada offers cheap accommodation in Tulum on the beach to suit your needs. Tulum Beach: This beautiful Caribbean beach is where those looking to relax and unwind will head. It’s home to a superb white sand beach, some lovely restaurants, and a few boutique spas and hotels. This particular area of the cenote is roped off to swimming but it’s possible to go scuba diving down there.

The Temple of the Descending God is named after the unusual figure carved on its facade, which represents a winged deity descending from the heavens. This temple is particularly fascinating due to its unique alignment with the setting sun during the spring and fall equinoxes. Tulum Ruins are located at the very end of Tulum’s northern beach, Playa Paraiso. The opening hours are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, 7 days a week and the Tulum Ruins entrance fee is 75 MXN. From here, you can take a taxi to your accommodation for around 50 – 100 MXN if you are staying in town or 150 – 200 MXN if your accommodation happens to be somewhere along Tulum Beach. Return to Tulum to enjoy Tankah Cove. With its beautiful private beach, natural freshwater pool, jungle cenote and beachfront restaurant, you can spend several hours at the beach club. You can book rooms with private patios or hot tubs and there’s a coffee machine in the room too (which would’ve saved me from getting grumpy some mornings when I hadn’t yet had mine!).
