About this deal

Yet she has zero survival skills and seems relatively unbothered by the fact she was locked up for an entire decade. Drawing parallels to the narrative style of Verity, McFadden's storytelling possesses an elusive quality that entices the reader to uncover the layers beneath the surface. On top of that, all 4 main characters (I'm counting the 9-year-old brat as well, yes) are completely, irredeemably despicable. The housemaid is Millie who has recently been paroled from prison and having lost her job is living in her car. She also keeps herself in check as Nina's emotionally unstable behavior pushes her buttons until they nearly fall to the floor.

She's over the moon to have a job and a bed, but she quickly realizes something funky is happening in the home. I binged it in one sitting … yikes… The Housemaid 's plot took a completely different direction than I expected , and I loved every minute of it. Might I add I bought this at The Works, a favourite haunt of mine for books, so firstly the main reason I picked this one up was the cover, then one simple line in the synopsis had me hooked. Andrew compliments her cooking and invites her to join them, but she declines, as Nina seems irritated. We know next to nothing about Millie for at least 60% of the novel…so why are we supposed to care about her? A thoroughly enjoyable and deviously designed story to keep the reader guessing what will happen next.

It exceeded my expectations, had me gritting my teeth, squirming restlessly in my seat, and, even though I anticipated the delicious twist from the beginning, I still admired how the author perfectly developed this smart cat-and-mouse game. Nina is forced to drop out of college and begin working after she gets pregnant after a drunken one-night stand.Millie hears gossip from other mothers and nannies about Nina’s mental health and discovers an “antipsychotic” medication, among others, in Nina’s bathroom cabinet. Good for her for going in a totally different direction with no projection of her medical career/knowledge in the story. And the worst of all, she has a room in the attic where she's sleeping, and the door lock ONLY locks from the OUTSIDE. The storyline has a familiar ring to it as those of us who've read a billion psychological thrillers know. Anyone who loves The Woman in the Window , The Wife Between Us and The Girl on the Train won’t be able to put down The Housemaid !

Summertime is always the thriller season for me and I'm so happy I kicked off this season with something as good as these books.

Meet Millie: recently released from prison for a crime we don't know if she committed or what kind of crime she got involved in. She wakes up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and finds herself locked in; her is phone missing, and three heavy books have mysteriously appeared. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen. There are so many twists and turns in this book I was in knots and althought I thought I had it sussed no, no I definitely didn’t. When Millie starts there’s a shift to Nina straight away and you’d be forgiven for thinking she was a little crazy.

Our team is made up of book lovers who are dedicated to sourcing and providing the best books for kids. The plot twist in this one wasn't as shocking, BUT the way the plot developed from that point couldn't be predicted in any way.I don’t normally read thrillers either but picked it up because of the great reviews its been getting.
