About this deal

From 1920’s to 1950’s corset lost their popularity. Fashion has permitted woman to wear dresses and other garments without a corset. Corsets were still worn but by few but. They were now replaced by girdles. Girdles were not focusing on the waist, they were meant to control the stomach and hips, they were elastic and not restricting. The Corset is historical fiction at its best. The story is set against a well researched and fact filled Victorian lifestyle but there is a gothic side to it as well. Could it possibly be true that Ruth can sew death into the garments she makes or are the deaths which occur around her all coincidence? And then that perfect ending - what an unexpected twist. Maybe a while later even the bra would be considered the same way as a corset, who knows – something women were forced to wear to cater to the beauty standards of society.

Corsets are in focus from the first episode of the series. In one comical scene, Prudence, the eldest daughter of social-climbing Lady Featherington, is being "tight-laced" into a corset by a maid to be slimmer for her presentation to Queen Charlotte. The laces are yanked until she can barely breathe, as her unsympathetic mother looks on, saying that when she was Prudence's age, her waist had been "the size of an orange and a half". When Dorothea’s charitable work leads her to Oakgate Prison, she finds herself drawn to Ruth, a teenage seamstress – and self-confessed murderess – who nurses a dark and uncanny secret. A secret that is leading her straight to the gallows. As Ruth reveals her disturbing past to Dorothea, the fates of these two women entwine, and with every revelation, a new layer of doubt is cast… After reading The Silent Companions, a modern masterpiece of Gothic fiction, I was very excited to try another novel by Laura Purcell. The Corset does not quite live up to the high expectations set by The Silent Companions, but it is, nevertheless, a very compelling read. However, in some periods, bodies (Tudor-era corsets) were worn to achieve a tubular straight-up-and-down shape, which involved minimizing the bust. Bodies, also known as a pair of bodies, for women's and menswear into the 16th and 17th centuries achieved their stiffened shaping through materials including steel, wood, or whalebone, and were constructed of two parts and fastened at the sides. [3] There is a HUGE difference between modern corsets and antique corsets. I have worn both and will never wear a modern corset again, they are dangerous and uncomfortable. An antique reproduction? I will wear that instead of a bra any day.Breathe in… the corset – a garment that is never far from a revival in fashion circles – has been attracting a far wider audience recently. Online searches for the body-sculpting garment have soared, along with demand for four-poster beds and wisteria, an interest in all things Regency sparked by the period romance TV series Bridgerton. Warhol: Biography". 6 January 2013. Archived from the original on 6 January 2013 . Retrieved 10 November 2017. The tight lacing in a corset, in my mind, is a symbol of the submissive role that women played in those times. A ‘corsetee’ moves a little bit more carefully and a lot more subdued than one without the confines of the corset. But many others will say that in a corset you walk a little bit more elegantly and gracefully. Yes, the wearer of the corset is perceived as attractive because of the strange waist-hip ratio entrenched in our minds. It is the precursor to the waist/body shapers, girdles and wonder bras we have today. So far, so gothic. It’s well told and the menace builds as it should. The whole thing doesn’t really seem to know whether it’s a crime novel or a supernatural chiller.

However, I found the ending to be very satisfying – Laura Purcell pulls together the two storylines in a really wonderful way. I was fine with the men’s storylines to be unresolved because in the end – this is a book about Ruth and Dorothea. Doyle, R. (1997). Waisted Efforts, An Illustrated Guide to Corset Making. Sartorial Press Publications. ISBN 0-9683039-0-0. Other types of corset dresses are created for unique high fashion looks by a few modern corset makers. These modern styles are functional as well as fashionable and are designed to be worn with comfort for a dramatic look. I really think Purcell is a talented writer with her atmospheric historical settings, creative plots, ability to raise tension. However, she couldn't escape certain pitfalls in this book that some writers often do.

Both of the plot lines and their intersection move forward inexorably as the book explores themes of rationality, imagination, and redemption on its way toward a nifty ending. ("Nifty" is probably not the best word, but it is the one that immediately came to mind as I finished.) I liked the blurred line between mental instability and the supernatural. Did Ruth cause these deaths through her supernatural power? Or is she just blaming herself due to her own overwhelming guilt? Riegel, Robert E. (1963). "Women's Clothes and Women's Right". American Quarterly. 15 (3): 391. doi: 10.2307/2711370. JSTOR 2711370. Ruth is a prisoner, accused of committing murder, but did she actually do it? The stories she tells are pretty far fetched, are they sure she isn’t just mad? This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, after reading and loving Silent Companions. Unfortunately it fell short of her previous one.
