L’Amour dashed off the original yarn for a pulp magazine in the mid-1940s, and it has passed through several versions—an audio play, a screenplay, and comics. It was a region of some ten square miles backed against an even rougher and uglier patch of waterless desert, but the basin was bad enough itself. I won’t say much else about them because I don’t want to (possibly) spoil anything for those who haven’t read this yet. I love his detailed descriptions of the countryside and although the characters are often predictable and a bit shallow, they are good for my purposes and the author has so many of them I will never run out of this peaceful night-cap.

Matt Mathurin (from Latin, saintly) Sabre didn't want to draw in response to drunk foolish Billy Curtin, so agreed to boy's dying request to carry thousands home to wife Jenny, slender "tall for a girl, yet she came no farther than his lips" p168. The Marshall of Painted Rock: The Marshall is approached by a beautiful woman who has just arrived in town. The original text has now been augmented by supplementary notes by David List, and appendices on SAS casualties and awards by David Buxton. Although I’m not all that big on Westerns, whether in print or on screen, I really enjoyed this style and will likely look for more.

This book is a collection of short stories by the author, complete with author notes before each story. Real outlaw caught, Nat takes home to Mary the small red-spotted toad that led him to life-saving water, and explains turquoise source of his mystery wealth. The art by Thomas Yeates is black and white and reminds me of old western films from when I was a kid. In one of these 11 stories of the collection titled Law of the Desert Born, published in 1983, a hunted man rubs the barrel of his rifle down with dirt to make sure there is no glint of shining metal that could give his location away.

It always seems to me that when I get into a short story it finishes when I am justing wanting more of the story and the characters. Never like short stories but rarely do I not like anything written by Louis L Amour and this was not an exception.I recently read Louis L’Amour‘s memoirs, The Education of a Wandering Man, in which he recounts his early years of moving throughout the country and world, from one job to the next, reading whatever he could get his hands on.

Law of the Desert Born is a beautifully illustrated retelling of one of L'Amour's short stories - based more upon an audio version by L'amour's son Beau and Katherine Nolan. Malcolm James served as Medical Officer with the SAS throughout 1942 and 1943, and Born of the Desert is his atmospheric account of his life in the North African desert, the bitter fighting against Italian and German targets, and the forging of a remarkable elite unit. Adapted and republished man times over, this graphic novel is just the latest rebirth of “the Desert Born. When I got into westerns, the first thing I learned is if you want a great read in the genre, turn to Louis L’Amour. Light fading along the top edges of the front and rear panels and the rear panel has some white marks at the left edge and three small stans.Incredible black and white art with intricately detailed background and emotional close-ups of facial features especially shown in the eyes.
